Broken Service

Can anybody settle an argument how long do you have to be away from Royal Mail (then start back) to constitute broken service...thanks in advance.

A bit more detail i left Royal Mail for another job away from Royal Mail for about 8 weeks...Was lucky enough to get started back but dropped down the seniority list....But was told that 8 weeks away wasn't long enough for me to lose my seniority just want to clear it up......

As I understand it your seniority during the 8 weeks is suspended and then restarted on return so if anyone started within 8 weeks of you they will then leapfrog you. So you should not drop to the bottom of the list (unless you were near the bottom when you left) but more than likely you will slip a few places.

13.6 All service within an appropriate grade, whether on permanent or temporary basis, will count for seniority purposes, with the exception of any periods worked on a casual contract, or during a career break or sabbatical. Unpaid leave will count provided there is no break in contact. Service after age 60 will continue to count. However service must be continuous for seniority purposes, with periods prior to any break in contract (due to re-employment, for example) not generally included, unless there are exceptional circumstances applying to particular cases that are agreed at local level.

I think it means - you left, you lost your seniority.
Unless......there was a local agreement.........?

Previous service doesn't count for seniority, but it does count for Annual Leave entitlement.

but if you take a sabbatical you keep your seniority though dont you ?
