bit of advice please

hi im due to start at the begining of april on a 25hr 3month fixed term contract.
i currently have a job as a warehouse/courier driver which i hate, i start at 5am do all the prep work and then go out deliverying myself once all the other vans are loaded and gone at around 8.30, i then work till 2pm and finish i dont mind the delivering but hate the warehouse bit. im only on £6.09ph which is just terrible so i applied for this and got it but im worried about the 3 month contact, am i liable to have that rolling on or can i just expect to work for 3 months and then be finished?
also ive read alot about cutting off, im supposed to start at 9-2 and im not really bothered if i go over because it cant be worse than starting at 5am but if i do go over my finish time due to having loads to deliver will i get paid for it? or will i have to fight to get paid for what i actually work for because if thats the case i may stay where i am at least i know i will get paid for what i work?
any advice would be appricated

You will get payed if you go over but keep your own record of what you work since some managers will try it on.Also people who cut off means more overtime for you if you want it.

As for your 3 month contract they seem to be the norm now it will be renewed if they still need you basically.

I think to give a balanced answer you might get paid depending on if you work in a decent Delivery office. From this forum it is obvious that it is not garanteed you will get paid if you go over! Most of us part timers have to constantly fight to be paid for the hours we work. And most line managers will lie, cheat and steal to meet their overtime targets.

They're not s'posed to but they might. I've only done 2 weeks of deliveries in the 9 weeks or so since I joined RM (long story !). I was paid "extended" for those 2 weeks but not for the hour I went over after they sent me out on an adhoc delivery while on rehab. I couldn't be bothered to argue and got the hour back by "other means". I do wonder what'll happen when I go back to delivering and will be just as slow as when I started.

No dont worry you wont be expected to be up to full speed when you start. Your delivery should (most likley not) be prepped in the frame and ready for you to bundle up and go out. Once you have got the hang of things in a few weeks getting finished by 2pm is possible.

However if your work is not fully prepared it will take you longer and you may (prob will) go over your time. Your manager will require you to tell him/her BEFORE you go out on delivery wiether you will extend your time on over time or not finish the delivery and leave some behind. Most managers would prefere you to stay out and finish and pay the extra money.

Its quite hard in the first few days to know how long a delivery will take so it may be an idea to approach your manager anyway and see if its ok to work past your time. Overtime rate is just under £10 an hour (thats full time rate) so you can soon make up your money if its busy, and you want to of course.

One last thing dont forget your are entitled to a paid meal break within your duty time (think its 20 min PT ). If you decide to work through without stopping (tbh you will need a break) you can claim that back as OT as well.

No need to be sorry . Totally agree the CWU screwed us on a national level

However on a local level and when your just starting a good rep can help you out with many of the problems like extending and cutting off etc.

hi i started end of oct on 3 month 25 hour week contract, it was extended end of jan till april so hoping it will be extended again, dont worry about going over just book it the next day, or after a few weeks you get to know how long the delivery will take and tell lino you want to book an hour for that day, in our place they are pretty good so no problems booking overtime, but keep a record of it, and one thing to mention, when you go over its not time and a half like most places is just a few pence more than the flt rate, and also ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ dont listen to any one else but we all love door to doors !!! lol

i was talking to a local postie who said dont come its all changing and all that but he also said there changing the rounds round daily now so i guess it will be hard to gauge how long it will take to complete the round and if i will do it within time, and it will be hard to let the boss know before i go out if it will take longer to agree to be paid for it.
i dont mind working over if theres alot to do, but i hate having to argue to try and get paid for working hard trying to do a good job, if it ends up like that i dont think i will last very long
i really wish i hadnt found this website after reading peoples posts over the last few weeks its really put me off even starting working for rm lol

Ah there's the rub You should try car forum's you would never buy another car

Trouble is that mostly we come on here to moan and there are not many posts like "really enjoyed being out in the spring sunshine today etc" although it is enjoyable.

Always best to go into something knowing the worse and your eyes wide open

Must admit, if I'd known before I started how much hassle it'd be, and confrontation (more in the last 2 months than I've known in more than 30 years in various other jobs but then I won't take sh!t off anyone, which is maybe why I'm having a hard time), I'd never have joined. I just want to be allowed to get on with whatever job I'm paid to do, and to be treated fairly. However, now that I'm here, and little prospects of work elsewhere, I am determined to give it a try. But if you've other options, my personal advice would be - think hard.

yeah thats what worrys me, theyve got u over a barrel with the 3 month contract so if you dont do as they say then i will be worried i get shown the door but i wont work for nothing so if it does happen i will just leave, i would rather sit at home and get paid nothing than work and get paid nothing lol

can i mention the depo i am going to be working at on here so i can ask if anyone else works there to ask what its like?
