Infinity and Beyond

Post by Tamsky »

I work in a unit that took 17 days strike action in 2009, not only in support of the national union, but also over local issues of perceived bullying by managers. We resolved the local issues with the support of the Outdoor secretary. Others thought the national issues were resolved by the National agreement 2010 and beyond. I was opposed to the Agreement because of the D2D element and because I did not believe that the leopard had changed it's spots. How could we work hand in hand with senior managerial teams that have dragged the service down?.

I was asked yeasterday by a part timer who had stood on the picket line with us full timers when he could expect a full time contact. I was unable to answer him. Despite all the fluffy words in the national agreement RM have reverted to type and the CWU seem unwilling, or unable to challenge this.

Over the last few days various stories are emerging from the top that all is not as it seems. The first rule of fight club is never talk about fight club, the first rule of the CWU seems to be never talk to the members on the ground.

RM have now said that if no savings can be made then no methods revisions will be introduced - What about weight off the shoulder, the tools for the job and manageable workloads and 1 in 4 Saturdays off as a minimum. RM are now saying that they regret making part time staff up to full time since this reduces flexibility - part time staff are more likely to work overtime as required to flex up. What about 75/25 split? RM are now saying that they want to 'support' the Indoor workload Tool with the capacity plan, what about proper and transparent measurement of our indoor work.? RM are now saying that they want to extend the transformation of the service to 2015, what about the promised pay rewards and bonus payments before 2012?.
The CWU have now asked Roger Poole for help in getting RM to respect the Agreement. Watch this space.

I took part in a discussion today over changes at CWU HQ, all the talk was of merging executives, reducing democratic input and cotrol through biennial conferences etc. I have a more radical solution to the cash crisis - What about national officers on OPG pay grades and on week on week off the job. Maybe then I could answer the part timer with some confidence.

The question is whether it is a revision which provides the tools for the job, reducing weight on the shoulder with achieveable workload and delivery spans and achieves one in four Sats off or whether it is a revision based on taking hours out through the Capacity plan and Geo route.

I don't deny we need revisions, but change will only succeed with the consent of the staff.

I wouldn't bank on them going through, 21 years service, company will be sold then it all starts again.

We had the second option and it was a total disaster, we just got " the computer says it is possible , go away " . Finally the planners and managers are showing some respect and have realised that they need us posties onboard and have stressed our input is vital . I really think this second revision will work and in my opinion the new way of working will be a winner for us posties . RM senior management will just have to accept the facts and figures and weep because the 2010 agreement isn't going to deliver the savings they planned upon.

The CWU have now asked Roger Poole for help in getting RM to respect the Agreement.

And what if he can't?
What if they won't?
Does HQ have the stomach for the fight?
Do the members ?

Some units are already on a 39hr week (and have had the Transformation Lump Sums,) while others might not see it until 2015.
The irony being that those offices that won't give them any savings are the very units that are currently under resourced and need the revisions.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

A FRESH START
• A radical improvement in relationships at all levels. Developing a culture of common
objectives and aligned interests.
• A shared vision of modernisation in the joint interests of customers, employees and the
company.
• A completely fresh approach to managing local change, including greater support for
local representatives. The focus will be on joint problem solving and practical solutions
rather than disagreement, management imposition and industrial action.
• To build trust and ensure the agreement is honoured the continuing involvement of the
Independent Facilitator and ACAS.

Great post Tamsky...worrying times ahead more so with regards to the last part of your post.
The last thing the CWU needs is further disengagement between members and HQ.
Suicidal for all involved.

We have been told the revision will go ahead, but it cannot worsen the office run rate,
so if it saves hours fine, if it means putting hours in, it wont, simples and yes the area
rep is aware of it.

...but it's not about savings stevie.
It's about using the agreed tools and if that means your office needs hours then so be it.

It seems that there is finally a grass roots upsurge in dissatisfaction with the way the union is being managed, long overdue in my opinion. For far too long the leadership have been treating the membership as a cash cow with scant regard to their wishes. It would appear now that even the likes of Dingo realise that things cannot continue as they are if the union is to survive as an independent body.

The TUC also has to shoulder some of the blame as there has been very little in the way of concerted attacks on Government policy especially of the last Labour government.

They already are though with the half dozen weekly unpaid D2D's , and since I remember being informed that "nothing is agreed until everything is agreed " and that the agreement should be judged as a whole package , that could raise some interesting questions.

Cracker of a post by TAM ,certainly highlighted some critical issues with exceptional clarity :Applause
