Contract saga

Post by bigtoddy »

I have been with Royal mail for over 2 years now. I started on a permanent contract with only only 15 hours. My work time per week was on average 36 hours PW. I then was moved to Holiday cover and my contract was increased to 25 HPW. My normal working week is 40HPW. I asked my manager if my contract would be increased and the answer was not at the moment because there is being changes being made. Since that discussion I have learned that an employee who took my job over at 12HPW, there contract has been increased to 25HPW the same as me. Although I have no gripe with them. why should there contract be changed and not mine. Also in a neighboring office there has been several employees whos contracts have been increased.
My view is why should I do without?
When I am on holiday I get a measly £170. Whilst during my working week I get the full 40 hours.
Also getting a lower rate of D2Ds and still doing the same as everyone else in the office. A bit unfair if you ask me.

Is there anyone in the same boat as me?

Royal mail will never increase someones hours unless there is a revision in place. You either a) do the overtime if you need it or b) don't do it and just wait and see what happens :pray

It works out cheaper for someone to claim overtime than to hand out a full time contract. Overtime fluctuates from week to week so lets say you worked 7 hours one week and 10 the next, royal mail saves 3 hours by not giving you that full time contract. Its not a huge saving within one office but you multiply it by how many d.o's are in the uk then it becomes a huge saving...royal mail know about this and the union are trying to sort it out (kind of) :confused .

A 25hr part-timer working 40 hrs will be paid..
25hrs@£8.86=£221.60 approx
Delivery supp =£12.90 approx
15hrs@£9.37 =£140.50 approx
Total.£375 approx.

A full-timer working 40 hours will be paid £354.50+£20.60(del supp).
Total.£375 approx.

So yes a part-timer working 40 hrs will receive the full delivery supplement but it won't show up on your pay slip as delivery supplement....just as a higher overtime rate.

I though up to 40 hrs P/T got the same basic £8.86 per hour, then the increase kicks in?

I pinched the post from one of Fishtank's posts.
A p/t gets 51p (the delivery supplement hourly rate) added to their o/t rate up to 40hrs.
If they work a 40hr week they get the full £20.60 delivery supplement.
It doesn't appear on their payslip as that but is reflected in the higher o/t rate.

Thats correct - its RMs method of explaining it on the Pay chit.

To get the Del Supp for the hours between 40 and their contract PTs get a higher hourly rate but end up with the same overall basic ppay.

Im in exactly the same boat mate. Also you will find that following a revision they will make up people to 'full time' based on seniority, irrespective of whether they are capable of doing the job.

Of course they will because seniority is definite whereas capability is purely speculative.
I have never met a manager who would pick a decent hardworking but strong-willed employee over a
slimy, crawling "yes man"...capability rarely,if ever comes into it when you leave managers to choose.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

It was interesting and informative to read the posts with regard to RM contracts. I am comming to the end of a three month casual contract and was wandering what is the next step. If RM are been satisfied with my perfomance to date etc etc, do they simply extend the casual contract or is a fixed term contract offered. I am currently on the basic hourly rate of £5.98. Thanks

I get the feeling that most people who 'sign' these RM contracts are just happy to have found a job and so don't really know the right questions to ask about them.... by the time they do its too late!

Thanks Indy for your post. You are wrong in what you say. The questions were asked at the interview which was conducted by the current Manager of the Sorting Office. He would'nt commit with regard to the question as it was going to be three months down the line. However having now completed almost three months I did ask regular posties who stated they werent sure what the next step would be but believed that as you worked hard without complaint you will probably be kept on. They did not know what sort of contract would be offered. Thats why I was asking. But yes I really did want the job even at £6.00 for the first three months. Just hoping for a better offer. Upon completion of my current contract I will obviously talk to the manager. Sorry Indy, to post that reply you obviously had a stressful day.

Hi, I'm a part-timer who nearly all the the time covers a 40 hour duty, so I get :-
36 hours = £315.90
4 hrs ot = £37.52
Del supp = £18.36
=£371.78
My pay rate box on my wage slip says £371.40, but my gross pay is £371.78.
As stated in a previous post, a full timer gets £354.50 + £20.60 = £375.10.
So, why is my pay rate not £375.10?
I do pay for 2 weeks extra holiday a year, but nothing shows on my payslip.
If my sums are correct then £375.10 - £371.78 = £3.32.
If I assume that the £3.32 a week is taken off for my hols, then even when I work out £3.32 x 52 weeks = £172.64.
So, am I actually paying towards my 2 extra weeks holidays or not?
Obviously, if i'm not contributing towards the extra, and haven't since I joined 5 years ago, then royal mail will want to claw that money back. The thing is, if I am correct, then do I a) Keep quiet or b) say something now before they hit me with a big 'you owe us money!'!!??
Any advice would be great!! :hmmmm
