taken off your own duty

a colleague at work was told to come off his own duty (just for the day) and to do another duty for that day, this was because a lad had been brought in to work his day off, but he did not know the duty they had brought him in for. the guy who was taken off his rostered duty knew both duties, so, management said, there is a new procedure involving operational needs called 'matrix'.....(nowt to do with the film). has anyone heard off this?? i,ve heard of operational needs, but it seems they are just making shyte up to suit themselves. im of the opinion if you are brought in on your day off, you should not be able to pick and choose,,,,if you cant do the duty they want covered, then dont come in.

They are not a get out clause for stupid management decisions.
"matrix" is just some bollox your manager made up to sound clever.

if the fellow new both dutys what the harm in moving i do it all the time it makes a change from the norm.but if you come in to do o/t you should do what ever there is really if you want the money do the work

This happens every single day in my office including to me almost every week. Ideally the person coming in on their day off should be put on whatever is not covered but often this is just not practical especially with rurals. Also if they say they will only come in to do a certain duty then the manager is always going to move people to accommodate them rather than fail USO or have to go out and do it themselves.

take a look at the bottom of yor 318 and it will probably say "as directed".this means they can withdraw you from your duty and make you do another one but only within your scheduled hours.if it does not match your hours then tell them where to shove it.

Yes it might say "as directed" youwot but there should be a genuine operational need for it and just to make some guys O/T a little easier on him is not a genuine operational need.
Managers should never be allowed to abuse the "as directed" excuse otherwise there is no point in picking duties in the first place...you might as well just roll over and take whatever they throw at you.
I thought you guys in the mailcentre were hardcore.

Chances are you wont be able to 'resign from driving',once a driver always a driver.
Try and get a note from your doctor about something or another that means you are unable to drive for longish periods.

Narcolepsy...difficult to diagnose...deadly for a driver.
Watch though because if DVLA get wind of it they will have your license off you in a heartbeat.

Can you not just volunteer to work your day off and say that you will do the duty that the person who pissed you off is on instead of the one management wants you to do.
If they allow you to do this duty then you piss off the person who pissed you off and if management say no, then you throw in a grievance stating favouritism.
That should stop the problem.
