can I be sacked over unexplained sickness ?

Firstly I've been a postman for 21 years, I have an unexplained illness which comes and goes.
I have sicknotes from the gp signing me off yet I have just been told I will be dismissed at the end of May.
Any advice would be appreciated coz I'm going out of my mind at the moment.

I was told once by ER staff that as long as I had sick notes I would be ok because it is something that has the doctors baffled.
But in my dissmisal letter it says, " as a result andif, as you claim, this was a serious problem, then I would have expected you to have personally taken steps earlier to have ascertained as to the nature of the problem."

This to me says they think I am making the whole thing up ! how can I be held responsible for doctors who say Oh we have to find out whats going on but then do nothing ?

Felt totally under pressure to sign the dismissal letter there and then to start an appeal and now that I've read it through at home am unhappy with some of the things they have said but feel I have stuffed myself by signing it to get the appeal ball rolling.
1 more thing says there were no relevent ATOS reports ? whats that about I've seen the RM doc so why no reports ?

Have you fallen foul of the Attendance Procedure as agreed between The CWU and RM?

We don't doubt that your illness is genuine(well we do as all RM managers are Dr Kildares) it's the amount of time off you've had off...blah blah blah.

If you've seen Atos an there was reports sent back to Royal Mail then you should freedom of info Atos for the smeggers.

Postman, it's no unusual for folks to be given eight weeks notice rather than the usual one week! It used to happen a lot in our office.

i thought if youve done 21 yrs service and you get a stage 3 they give you 21 weeks notice to terminate your employment ie 15 yrs service equals 15 weeks notice and so on

Tbf she shouldn't of been sacked she should of been IHR'd,but then again it's RM.

just tell manager you are starting court procedings soon get ya notice ripped up then few in our office did they they dont like it when you say that

Thanks, well there are no ATOS reports and I was given 12 wks notice.
Just sent them in a nice formal Appeal letter basically saying if the doctors can't diagnose my sicknes (which is 100% genuine.) then on what medical grounds can RM tell me that my future performance wont get any better.
If that fails I will definately be going the court route.Not sure about the attendance procedure Need to check that.

i take it youve had a stage3 meeting cant you appeal against them get the union rep on the case ive know loads of posties get off stage 3 good luck
