Hello all I am currenlty on the verge of leaving college in june 2011 and hoping to land and apprencticeship with royal mialo. I am very motivated to work for such a big company with career propsoects and good pay. I am based in birmingham and was wondering when they are going to be recruiting this year for the scheme.

Going on your spelling,i'd wait for your English results before thinking too far ahead...
Although on a serious note,i'd choose another employer.If/when we go private,it'll be mangement that will take the biggest hit!

Do you want an postman apprenticeship? It would probably be worth just applying for a normal posties job if so. They dont really look for qualifications or anything as its a pretty easy job apart from the manual labour side! If you really fancy going down the apprentice route would advise getting into something decent like electrical and gas etc. The job prospects in Royal Mail are pretty bleak to be honest and the conditions are even worse so not really a career business anymore.

Coming from someone who has just completed the core apprenticeship (how to be a postman, nothing to do with management), I would say don't bother, it is a complete waste of time.

At the end of it you get a NVQ level 2 in Mail Services, which is not worth the paper it is written on. Infact, I completed the entire NVQ assessments in around 1 hour, with the second hour being a formality.

You get no support that is promised at induction, no training whatsoever, but you do get 3 days notice before you are sent on a day course with other 'apprentices' on public speaking, commercial awareness, or social skills.

Seriously, if you want a job with Royal Mail, just take an ordinary vacancy.

But I wouldn't recommend that too highly either.

Sounds crap!!! The cadet scheme of the 80's and 90's was much better, especially the outward bound courses where one time we had to sleep rough in the middle of nowhere in the rain with no tent.

My "outward bound" course was 3 months in Bosnia sleeping rough for the whole 3 months (sometimes we borrowed a tent, or slept in burnt out shells of buildings) and 18 hour days - Sad thing is I miss it now

An NVQ 2 in Mail Services is not worth a great deal as others have said. You would be better off going down the Graduate Recruitment route - which is open annually:

Good luck to you as most has said stay well clear of Royal Mail not a good move.
But good on you for asking and if you take the advice of all these posts on all these subjects keep well clear
At least you can show the Job centres you are trying to work.
