Unpaid Leave

Dear all,

I am currently working on a 20 hour contract as a postman in a DO office.

I originally requested a week off work to go on holiday in June 2011, however I was unsuccessful and did not receive this in my annuul holiday entitlement for the year 2011/12, due to the amount of other people requesting the same week.

I have tried unsuccesssfully to swap weeks off with other workers in my DO office, and therefore am wondering what the position is re unpaid leave - how to request it, the possibilities of being successful etc?

Any help would be appreciated - apologies if this has already been covered in other posts - thanks.

Unpaid leave or holiday entitlement, you wont get either if the staffing level is too low for that week. If you have already paid for your holiday, all you can do is throw a sickie.

Oh, come on! if there's no space then theres no space! how would you feel if a tradesperson you needed urgently threw a sickie to get time off??

Now that's an interesting proposition. The GMB has negotiated a deal with a local council that rather than lose jobs they are all going to take 4 days unpaid leave..................it's certainly one way of dealing with overstaffing.........perhaps there is a lesson to be learned in high places

but do they get the leave when they want because if it was royal mail they would not get it i can not get a day of for love nor money

If he took unpaid leave they could in theory cover his walk on overtime. There are ways of making everybody happy, RM chose not to!

Taking a sickie is not ideal, but if RM are not flexible sometimes people gotta do what they gotta do!

If you have already paid for your holiday you are not going to cancel it and lose all the money, only other option is to take a weeks leave unpaid
