DGP your pension is written in a discretionary trust and does not form part of your estate. If it did it could possibly be subject to inheritance tax and that is why it is written in trust. On death the 4 x salary , you will have probably filled in a nomination form stating who you would LIKE to receive the benefit. It does not necessarily mean that the trustees are obligated to carry out your nomination as they have discretion under the trust to pay it to whom they feel is most needy of the benefit.

Phone the CWU Legal Department and ask them to send you a Free Will Pack. I found it impossible to email them.
The Will Pack contains a form which you fill in with your details, the details of your Executor(s), and how you want your estate (assets) to be distributed.
You send the completed form to the Leeds office of Simpson Millar Solicitors, who are their Probate specialists.
They will send you a Draft Will which you sign in the presence of two witnesses, who should not be beneficiaries.
You return the Draft Will to them, and they will verify that it has been correctly completed, signed and witnessed.
They will hold the original copy for you (no charge), and send you a copy, which you should keep in a safe place.

It is an excellent service, and I would recommend anyone who hasn't made a Will to do so.

We will send a free will pack to the member explaining all they need to know and it includes a questionnaire for them to complete and send to our Panel Solicitors. Our Solicitors will then draft a standard will for the member (and partner if they wish) based on the information contained in the questionnaire. It may be that the member requires something more complex than a standard will. For example, they may need inheritance tax advice or perhaps they own a property abroad. If that is so, then our Solicitors will contact them to discuss their needs. Non-standard wills may incur a charge although this would be agreed with the member in advance with the solicitor and will be at a discounted rate obtained by the CWU.

Yes. Spouses too. We did.

Does that mean they could pay it out to RM because they're in most need

Nice one DGP but no they would be acting outside of the discretionary powers that they hold, and would be personally liable.
