d2ds if the customer only knew

Post by frankieboy »

Is it just my office or are others the same when it comes to d2ds, it seems that nobody is really bothered whether they deliver them or not because of the way we are paid for them now. at the end of each week there is just a great pile of them in the corner of the room where people chuck them to be discarded. i,ve also read on other topics that people are just dumping them in skips now just to get rid.if only these companies knew what was happening to their adverts/leaflets etc then i don,t thing they would be very happy, do you? why did they have to change a system on d2ds when it didn,t need changing

Just deliver the buggers. Not worth risking your job by dumping. It's "work load" now, so cut off if mail too heavy !

Our office doesn't rigidly enforce the 1/6th ruling, nor is there a charge of wilful delay if they're left in your frame, hence in our office it's common to throw them all in to the fitting at the start of the week and take them where you are going (which is, no matter what Royal Mail might think, the best way to do them, as it ensures 50% to 60% of them get done on the light days, and also causes a minimum of insult to the customer by giving them their 'proper' mail with their 'improper' mail - naturally, Royal Mail doesn't see it this way as all mail is live mail, but that is simply a sign of their own affliction, as far as I am concerned). Unfortunately, us part-timers have neither the time nor the luxury of overtime to prepare them in this manner, unless there is only one or two d2ds (once in a blue moon).

This puts added pressure on certain individuals and is why, I am convinced, some people are unable to do them. Personally, when I first started, I found it impossible to do them all. Now, on the lighter Mondays and Tuesdays, I can usually prep all my d2ds before going out and ensure that they are all in the frame, then I can take them 'where I'm going' the rest of the week before mopping them up on Saturday. It's not a bad way of doing them and it ensures I can get all my d2ds done and work my 5 hours per day exactly. However, were we to be forced to do them the way other offices are doing them, it would be impossible for me to balance the workload and not have to cut off on a daily basis. I personally do them all at present, but if the situation changed, I wouldn't be taking out most of the mail, let alone the d2ds.

They'd still get prepped into the frame though. I don't know why people don't do that as a bare minimum, but I guess they haven't got used to the idea of working to your time, balancing the workload, and not running around desperately trying to complete an impossible task. They're trying to compress an impossible workload into their hours and, as a consequence, we are seeing an excess due to pressure and the inability of the workforce to actually perform to the ridiculous levels expected of them. I don't doubt there is an element of complacent carelessness, or even laziness, in some of the d2ds that are 'dumped' as excess, but at the same time I think there is a cause deep down and then there is a symptom, which the original poster has outlined. It's not about d2ds being low priority, or about the office not giving a damn, it's about offices as a whole failing to fit the d2d workload into the total workload due to not having enough hours.

Part-timers find it especially hard and are expected to perform miracles to a) complete their d2ds, and, b) complete their rounds, on a daily and weekly basis. Myself and a number of others are able to do it by luck, allied with no small amount of youthful exuberance and stamina. Yet, as the work-force moves more and more towards a majority part-time staff, I wonder if RM has made another myopic move in not considering one of its growth markets, and the ways in which it is going to meet the trend for increased d2d coverage? The future seems to be five, six, seven - whatever number - of d2d contracts, yet the trend also tells us that part-timers are finding it more and more difficult to complete not just their d2ds, but their entire expected workload on a daily basis. I suppose one could be very blase and put forward another point of view entirely - that Royal Mail doesn't really care, nor does it have the ability to think about tomorrow and what that might bring.

It certainly seems to be the way that our delivery office works. Tomorrow? What's 'tomorrow'?

They are a pain to prep but they make delivery easier if you put them in the frame correctly as you dont have to fan through all the mail to get to the next drop.

Spot on. It just mail when all said and done, who are we to worry about who is insulted by it or not ? Is it not the case people who supply us mail to deliver (d2d or otherwise) are our customers anyway. ? They can always opt out if they are that bothered.

Is that not minimum? The distribution is down to the person in charge of the round anyway, these are guidelines.

If you have roughly the same number left over every week, it probably means the A+ is wrong.
