Hi people
Started a 30 hour contract this week and got my 1st wage slip today I was deducted £50.80 tax and £15.93 n.i so £66.73 in total deductions does that sound about right? I have always previously been paid monthly so wanted to check?

What is your tax code,chances are you may be on emergency tax.

My tax code is BR CUM just sounds like deductions are a lot to me?

That is an emergency tax code - when I started they put me on to that and I didn't notice - got a rebate years later.
I would call wages and ask them if they have your P45/P60 from previous employment and keep on top of it. The rebate is nice but getting the money every week is better.

Get your P45 off to HR as soon as you get it. Send it off yourself if you can because my DOM never sent mine in and now I've got to pay £500 tax back to the taxman from years ago!

Your tax code will probably be 647L which means you start paying tax after you've earned £6470, and you'll pay roughly 20% tax thereafter and of course NI contribtions..............hope that helps :)

I started about 4 months ago and to be honest, the HR department (or where ever) are spot on in my opinion. They will automatically have you sorted to the proper code + amounts, along with the tax you have paid back on top of it within about two weeks.
As to how much tax you pay, it's down to what you have been doing before now. If for example you have been unemployed or a student or something, you will be paying no tax at all until April, just small NI amounts.
