Being Made Redundant

A couple of weeks back several of us at our DO got letters from RM, which only extended our temporary contract by a further six weeks, we are used to getting these but they normally extend the contract by 12 weeks, the letter also stated that on that date our employment with RM would be terminated. When we challenged our DOM about it he reckoned it was just someone in HR doing their job properly and gave us a lot of bullshit about resources, the revision etc.

The Lino's have said it's a load of bollocks too as the DO needs more staff not less, the Union Rep says the same.

However today being a little worried about not having a job in four weeks time I called HR to be told that these letters are only sent out when requested by a DOM, and are not the "normal" contract renewal type letters, HR also gave me the talk about Area requirements and budgets.

We are going through the process of the revision, the DOM has said that there could be up to 8 part timers made up to full time, so if he does that, there's 80 hrs a week elsewhere he doesn't need.
Has anyone else come across this?

On our renewal of contract of another 12 weeks, it stated that R.M foresee they will no longer need our services at this date due to restruction etc. This date coincided with expected completion of P&L where I believe R.M plans are that less staff will be needed as there will be a bigger workload per postie(Yes, this hasn't worked in areas where P&L are in force so not to sure of their plans)

Obviously do not know your DOM/LINO but I personally wouldn't trust any of them ......tell you that your job is safe knowing it isn't, just to make their job easier(I.E you stay, they do not have to take out a walk)

For your sake hopefully you will get another contract

Its just crass beyond belief that RM are messing around with peoples LIVES like this...what about the 'Dignity and Respect' RM are always shouting about? makes me ashamed to work for the company when they treat people like this

Unfortunately RM only ever intended the 12 week contracts to cover the changes while the Revisions went through. I believe these types of contracts are totally immoral but we've had about 10 guys turn up on them since Christmas. Like yourself they're keen to get a FT with RM but we know they'll just be strung along until they don't need them anymore.
Really feel for you mate, suppose the only thing you can do is start to look around for something else ASAP, know it's going to be hard good luck.

How long has the O.P. been working for RM?

Wasn't there a thread a while back where RM are obliged by law to offer permanant contracts to employees after a certain length of time (a year?) on temporary renewable contracts.

Therefore they were not renewing any temp contracts as they approached the relevant time period.

Agreement is 2 years the law is 4 years RM are ignoring our agreement and going with the law one.
Still being discussed apparently.

i had the same letter 3 weeks ago to extend till end of april, but every one in our d/o and other part timers say dont worry but all part timers are getting the same? so no part timers after this date, we have about 10 part timers on 25 hour contracts and like me would love to stay, surely the office cant run with this many less staff???

Initial 6 month contract for me, followed by a 3 month, and am now in the middle of the second 3 month. As others have stated though, they're not worth a shite, as they can be terminated at any time, with a week's notice. Still better than working for an agency though

Have put this down to RM higher management not knowing what day it is, never mind 3 months from now. But a six week extension does sound like someone, somewhere does have what passes for a plan. Really hope it works out for you mate.
