Who is right?

I have a business on my round that i have always delivered to at around half 7 every morning. Give or take a few minutes depending if im busy. Almost my first delivery. For myself and the customer it was easier if i signed for things. But my manager has now said that I must not sign for anything for any reason. This I totally understand and agree with him.

My problem is that I am not back to this part of my round until the end of my duty, around 11ish. So I started delivering their mail at the end to get the signature. They weren't happy with this and complained. Ive told them that I could deliver their normal mail early so its there waiting for them but they would have to go into the office for the priority's if they wanted them early. (they drive past our office to get to their work). But they will not accept this and demand they get all of their mail no later than 10. This then means I have to cut off and travel back to their location so its not late.

My manager says that I should deliver between 9 and 10 because it is a fairly important customer. (roughly 40 letters a day) and try and work round it. I say I can still give them an early delivery but not with priority's and feel I shouldn't have to go to the same delivery twice. And also 11 is not late and priority's don't have to be there till 1 and normal mail whenever. Who is right and what should I do?

You are 100% correct, tell them to sort it out with your manager, you can not be in 2 places at once. If he want's you to break off then he must be prepared to pay the o/t that will incure, simple.

We had this with a solicitor a couple of years ago. The only way the firm can insist on a early delivery is if they pay for it as a timed delivery. I believe this is something like £8-9 per day so that’s thier choice.

In the end the solicitors decided to collect there mail from the inquiry counter themselves on the way in.

They could always pay for a timed delivery otherwise if you change your route to suit them you are non-complient and in breach of our USO which states that all customers are to be treated equally - in otherwords last letter aim is 3pm.

Ask your manager what you should do, after all, it is in his remit....and if you have to cut off, dead walk back to your start for 10am, then dead walk back to resume deliveries, that might take you over your time, and he will have to authorise any OT, also it seems you have tried to reach a sensible compromise with the customer, so if the decision annoys them, it will be worth saying "Sorry, that decision is above my pay grade, you need to speak to my gaffer"

NB, some of my attitude above seems unhelpful, but you've tried to help the customer as best as you can, and they're still throwing a strop about it, so imho, if they don't want to compromise, sod 'em!

Beats me how you can get their mail sorted and prepped and delivered for around 7am. Just tell them "you get the mail when it gets there" (as Mike Summerbee would say "Simple as that") The priorties will reach you before 1 30pm. Some firms think they have a devine right to get mail early. Tell them "its the way forward now" Simple as that"

If they are not paying for a timed delivery then they have no right to demand anything! If they keep complaining i would be tempted to just 739 / red slip all their recorded letters for a couple of weeks see if they complain about your 11am drops then!

Just tell them to wait for P&L when they will be lucky to get mail every other day. Soon shuts them up i have found. Dont forget they will soon be charged for call & collect as well.

Delivering at 730 you must be in the dark ages there, have you not got into the new of working we still on IPS at 730 its the way to be so it is

DaveF14, are you on a driving duty?
If not, could you not insist with your manager that this company's mail is assigned to the driver that covers that area?
If you are a driver, is it feasible that the mail could be assigned to a walk that used a HCT (so the weight is not on the postie's back)?

Tricky situation this, there is an arrangement on my round for two businesses that get their mail out of sync which for me this simply means crossing the road, while another recently moaned at their delivery slot (as they have mail collected some days before I get there!) and I said its something they need to sort out with my lino (I have to go where the special are, plus take into account the deadline for some "trades" flat accesses).

Sounds like he's on a firms round to be honest.

Reality is they get their mail when they get it unless the pay for the privilege of getting earlier. If they whinge then tough s**t, why should they be prioritised over everyone else?

I'd do it LAST just for spite for the MAIN reason of you have spoilt them for years giving them early mail and the 1st time anything happens they turn on you .

Had a guy come up to me on my floating duty DEMANDING his giro as he was off up the town for something or other . I changed the duty so he got it 10 minutes before i finished .

They soon learn .
