Starting this week & got a few questions!

Hi people
Got a few questions if anyone can help me out:

1.I'm starting as a OPG this week on a 6 month 30 hour contract my hours are 8-4 mon to sat with a rotational day off but I can't work out how this can be 30 hours?
2.What break entitlement will I get working a 8-4 day?
3.As I have yet to order my uniform what should I wear on my 1st day on the job?
4.Also on the uniform order sheet it says you can order a winter and summer hat what's the difference and what are they like, are they just plain or Royal Mail branded?

Firstly you are correct that 8-4, 5 days/week is not a 30hr contract. Either the start time is wrong or the finish time is wrong.
On a 6hr day you woild be entitled to a 30 min PAID meal relief. On a 8hr day it is 40mins.
Wear whatever you find comfortable but make sure the footwear is good.
The summer hat is a floppy hat, the winter hat is a more substantial affair with ear protection. There is also a RM Beanie now.

*If you are working more than the 30 hours stated in your contract, book it as o/t untill you have the correct hours in a new contract provided.....this happened to me and some others, we are still fighting 3 months later for over £200 owed in basic pay

*Not sure on the difference in summer/winter hats, depending on your office, you may be waiting untill after your 6 month contract for any uniform

*Main thing is without stating the obvious.....wear some comfortable shoes(Not new ones without breaking them in a bit 1st)

8 - 4 - sure its not 0800 - 1400 - thats the normal pattern in my office - perhaps you misread the 24 hr clock.

I did think that but i've just double checked my contract and it says:

Hours of work: Part time, 30 hours per week, 8am to 4pm, 5 days across Monday to Saturday with a rotational day off

So i don't get it? when i work out my weekly wage on my contract it works out to 40 hours work!
I've got my induction tomorrow so will ask about it then see if they cn make any sense of it.

I was told on the phone not to order my uniform until after the induction so what will i be wearing till it arrives? Is there some 2nd hand uniform that i will have to wear or just wear my own stuff till my uniform arrives?

Just wear your own clothes until the uniform arrives. They will probably have a spare waterproof you could use.

Must be a common error by H.R, we had the same which has caused problems with correct payments untill a new contract was provided about 2 months later........yes, 2 months it took them and we told them day 1!!! We had a 30 hour contract but was getting paid for 25, so book any shortfall you have as o/t as we didn't and we are still waiting for 25 hours 3 months later

The hours of your contract and the hours you work are two separate things. The contracted hours are what you get paid when you have a week off, or go on the sick. The difference between the hours you work and your contracted hours should be claimed as overtime. Nobody told me that for three months when I started. The finishing time I was given three days a week (longs and shorts) included an hours overtime.

Ok so I'm guessing I'm contracted to 30 hours but do 10 hours overtime as my hours add up to 40 hours I'll ask tomorrow at the induction.
Also what time do you usually finish on a Saturday and when do you know when your day off will be?

Does your contract state rotating days off then or a fixed Tuesday like many others?? Again, it is probably depending on how your D.O is run, but it is very common for our guys on a rotating day off to not know untill the start of the week(Monday) and then get told on the Monday, that today is their day off Shouldn't happen but it does, lots!! Hopefully someone else will say that this never happens at their D.O and they always know 1 week before

Also, not that it is advised to go sick, but there is NO sick pay, just statutory and if you decide not to have your break(Your choice) add it onto o/t......do not do it for free
