Unsupervised on Saturdays

Our office is trying to change our working pattern times at the moment and the one that everyone is talking about is Saturday working till 2 30 pm I know some offices are doing these times already but we have a few Man City and Man United season ticket holders in our office which are very angry indeed about it.

Questions they are asking is “ If we have to work till 2 30 pm has the mangers got stay till that time as well.
Only posties has been ringing in on Saturday’s in the past to inquire about where there bags are and why are they delayed only to find nobody answers the phone.

If say a postie has a accident at 1 pm on a Saturday and he needed to go to the hospital and nobody answers the phone or the managers has gone home what’s the scenario ahead.
D.O.M says “ Phg will answer, but I know they will not and have no interest about the phones only the window.
Surly we are on the streets unsupervised.
Any union rep on that can answer this please…

I don't understand how so many offices can get away with not answering the phone. Yes, obviously the customers at the window take priority. Office in next town to us is notorious for this, customers will call us to complain cos they can't get thru.


As for the original query. No idea...

Do the management stay when the locker is open til late? Do they stay later now that lockers are open til 8pm? Again I must admit, our manager is pretty good, rarely leaves the office before 2pm on a Saturday. On the rare occasion that he does, it's usually between 1 and 1.30pm

They should be PIC (PERSON IN CONTROL) .One other point if you all start later then so should they managers, so what happened to working all your hours paid for by the bussiness.

I am sure that being left unsupervised especially when it comes to working indoors is illigal and breaches health & safety.

About 7-8 years ago i phoned my office to let the dom know that i had a puncture on the van and their was no spare. Their was no answer and was stranded 3 miles away from the office with no money and only my mobile phone. I decided to walk back to the office (a nice summer day, thank god) locking the van with some mail in the back of it and explained to the dom on monday that a van is left in the other town. He asked why i didn't tell him on saturday

There is no legal requirement for supervision.
Why would their be?...it's not an infant school.

We've had this argument in our office with the manager leaving (god knows how) early.... the answer we get (if at all) is that managers are allowed to make their own time as such they will come an go as they please. If you have a problem then call the Police/hospital etc otherwise it can wait.

I think that there should be a manager in attendance at all times when either posties are out on delivery i.e. till 2:18 or the office shuts OR at the very least a person in RM authority should be contactable if needs arise.

Its strange how we posties have been 'hit for six' with all the changes over the past 18 months or so YET the managers seem to be acting like they always have and nothings changed

If he locks the office and goes to accident then how do the others get in when they come back? IMO should always be a manager in office till last postie is back but with the twats we got nowadays as DOM's this aint ever going to happen.

There is a difference between a supervisor and someone charged with the security of the building.
There should obviously always be someone in the building until everyone is finished or an agreed working practice if the building is locked...but do they need to be a supervisor or manager?
Not should it be because i think a manager should always be on site.

Clearly there is no requirement, legal or otherwise, for there to always be a manager in attendance because there are plenty of smaller offices which never have a manager in attendance. Our DSM is currently talking about making all DOMs mon-fri so there will be no manager in the smaller (single manager) offices on saturday.
