Internal Advancement

I'm wondering what I can do to give myself better chance of internal advancement. I would like to make it into management eventually, senior management if possible. Are there any course or qualifications that would help me get there? I've completed the first year of a computer science bachelors degree and this can be traded in at the open university towards another degree to do with management. I just want some advice on what I can be doing to help myself.

I would probably put "Unemployed" and take my chances.

Simply not a question about your intent not to be 'the norm' but you of course have to realise that those above tell you not the other way round, and if you don't toe the line then 'your fired'
This of course is with the same level of harassement and bullying thats prevalent at all levels within royal fail
I would never consider to become a scapegoat, lacky,or subservient to these twa*s

If that is indeed the case i would at least wait a couple months until you can really see what the place is like before you aiming for a promotion! We all have good reason for bashing managers constantly but i cant imagine its a very good job for them either!

you dont need any qualifications to be one just ask to go on the acting list. but would say one thing to you there jobs are not as secure as ours now and if your going to do it do it now because once your a postman for a bit you will see how bad they treat the staff and how much they f#### each over to keep there own jobs it sad really.

We have got this really decent manager at my DO who has been there less then a year. I ended doing a walk with him when he first started and he was one of these really happy chirpy blokes but all together a really nice guy! He always fights for his staff, gives out overtime fairly and stands upto the DOM when hes in the wrong. And so this manager is treated like an outcast mainly looking after the divisions in sticks and on a regular basis ends up being forced to do deliveries as well! His chirpy friendly nature seems to be have been replaced with a depressed fake smile in so little time its kind of sad really.

My point is i can appreciate your ambition to become a manager and admire your not wanting to be like all the others but i guess if you do make it and dont tow the line you going to be sh** on massively! And if you do tow the line everyone will hate you!

The problem (as others have already said) is that if you work your way up, via the lower tiers of Management. Then you'll be put under emense pressure, to simply toe the line, rather than make decisions yourself. Which will inevitably put you in a position of taking the blame, for others bad decisions. You'll be "piggy in the middle", between those who've never done the job, and make (often daft!) decisions, based on what "looks good on paper". And those being asked to carry out those orders (which are often near impossible to achieve!).

Luckily, you're already on your way to getting 1 Degree. So if you get another one (directly relevant to Management), then you'll be able to skip those lower levels, and go straight in, at a level where you'll be able to make decisions for yourself. Obviously, they're still under pressure from "the top". But they have far more autonomy, than the ones we deal with every day.

Apart from anything else. You'll have a few years of working as a Postie, whilst you complete your course(s). So when you get there, you'll know what your talking about. One of the worst things RM have done (and there are a LOT of bad decisions), is taking people straight out of University, to do those jobs. Instead of just letting people progress from the shop floor, like they used to do (making them a dying breed in RM). No amount of time studying reports, and textbooks, can give you the same understanding of a job, as you get from actually doing it.
