claiming fuel

I travel to the delevery office to work but then I choose to travel to my route area and do my round on completion I come home.I understand I can claim fuel at 40p per mile ( not alot in this day and age what with fuel so high ).
But how do I go about this and what bit of the jorney am I entitled to cliam for ?

To me your post does not make sense,go to your DO and get a lift out and back,you do not get mileage for taking your car out to your delivery point,if that is what you mean.

And claim OT when you are late back which is slightly better than 40p per mile.

Why should they pay you to use your car when there are busses or bikes you can use? anyway you shouldnt be using your car on delivery, you're putting jobs at risk.

your not entitled to claim milage for any part of what you have stated, however i have posted below the rules on business milage and you need to ask for an r85 form from your tax office

the reason your not entitled is you are not required to use your own car as part of your delivery

Tax relief for business mileage in your own vehicle
You may be able to get tax relief for business mileage if you use your own vehicle for work. It can be a car, van, motorcycle or cycle.

You can work out the amount of tax relief – called ‘Mileage Allowance Relief’ - to which you are entitled like this:

1. add up your business miles travelled in the tax year
2. multiply your business miles by the approved mileage rate to work out the approved amount – follow the link below for the latest approved mileage rates
3. add up any mileage allowance payments received from your employer
4. compare any mileage allowance payments received with the approved amount

If the approved amount's more, you're entitled to Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference.

For example, you use your own car for 850 business miles and your employer pays you 30p per mile. The approved amount is £340 (850 times 40p). The allowance you get from your employer is £255 (850 times 30p). Your Mileage Allowance Relief is £85 (£340 less £255).

You are only entitled to Mileage Allowance Relief if your employer pays you:

My fellow posties and i have to drive 1/2 a mile to pick up our vans in the morning. We then finish, park back up, and then drive back in our own cars to the sorting office with trays etc. Ok, its only 5 miles a week, but, 20 miles a month, 240 miles a year.........Moneys money, and fuel is not getting cheaper!
Can we claim anything for this?

You got to be joking, you don't have to drive any where, it's your car. RM should provide a van to drop you to the other vans, refuse to use your car. If you want to use your car then I would request some type of payment for using your own vehicle, if RM refuse then don't use your car, simple!

Why don't you drop the trays off first then go get your cars...or am i missing something?

Why dont you use the RM van to take back the trays etc ? why drive your own car back to the sorting office carring RM equipment ?

Drive half a mile with fuel at 1.30 odd a litre are you nuts !. I park my car and cycle a mile into the office and then a mile out again its not really that hard.

As i said, i don't feel i'm taking the piss by asking, but walking......fair do's, but would you want to if it was pissing down/snowing/icy/blowing a gale. I just find it weird that allowances are not made for staff in this position. I would love to walk out my sorting office and unlock my van. Some posties may even be worse off, i don't know.......

Of course you cant If you use your car its your fuel, your tax, and your wear and tear out of your pocket and just pray you do not get robbed.

Occasionally i will drive to my local office to pick something up for my own office on my way to work. I then book one hours overtime for the trip which is easier than trying to claim fuel allowance.

I find it strange your vans are not near your office i assume parking problems ?
