I use my car to travel in to the office. And use it to travel to the place where I am to deliver from . What the crack with this insurance , millage etc . The person who has shown me the route comes into the office and is drop of by a van but when the job is done has to get a bus back He goes straight home. what is the deal with this surely it is the responsibility of RM to dispatch a person to a route and ensure they are return to the office.

Royal Mail Private Cars on Delivery Conditions of Use

1. Applications for Permission
In order to apply for permission to use their private car on delivery an employee must produce the following:

A) Their vehicle registration document

B) Their current valid driving licence.

C) Their current valid certificate of insurance covering the vehicle.

D) Documentary proof of ownership of the vehicle

E) A completed letter notifying their own insurers that they intend to use Royal Mail’s business policy whilst driving on delivery

F) A completed signed declaration of intent relating to the vehicle to be used on delivery

G) A current valid MOT certficate for the vehicle to be used on delivery where the vehicle to be used requires one by law

H) The vehicle for a visual inspection

2. Employee Obligations once Permission has been Granted
Once permisison has been granted it is the employee’s obligation
to ensure that:

I) He/she only uses the vehicle when in possession of a valid driving licence

J) He/she has a valid certificate of insurance to meet their
liability to third party insurance claims

K) He/she ensures (and can produce evidence if required) that
his/her insurer has been notified that the vehicle is being used
for business use and is covered by Royal Mail’s Business
Policy. It is the employees responsibility to ensure this is
acceptable to their insurers.

L) He/she must own the vehicle for which permission is granted

M) He/she has a current MOT test certificate for the vehicle, if required by law.

N) The vehicle is maintained in a roadworthy condition and is available for inspection.

O) He/she produces all the above documents for inspection every six months or on demand

P) Where any of the above documentation expires between inspections he/she produces new documenation for inspection by his / her line manager within a week of expiry

Q) All delivery and collection work is performed in accordance with specification (ie in respect of route, timings etc).

R) When the vehicle is used in connection with delivery work, the only passengers
permitted to be carried are other delivery employees on authorised delivery duties
who are being dropped off at a delivery route adjacent to the driver’s delivery
route.

S) Normal security of mail applies (ie any “second pouch” mail left in a car whilst
the employee is making the delivery, should be out of sight in the boot of the car, with the vehicle fully locked and alarmed – where an alarm is fitted). In areas identified as high risk no more thab one additional pouch should be left in the car.

The precise definition of business use varies with each insurer. Some insurers class moving along the route as a higher class of business use (courier use). Employees should not rely on the fact that a colleague’s insurer allows this, as all insurers will differ. Where movement along the route is excluded employees will need to bear this in mind if choosing to move their vehicles along the route. If the individual opts to extend their insurance to include business use then it is essential they seek assurance from their insurers that they are able to move the vehicle along the delivery route.

3. Moving the vehicle along the route – making drops
Whilst movement of the vehicle along the route is now covered, delivery should still be made on foot and not by using the car as a means for moving from one delivery point to the next.

4. Business Use
In the event that the employee’s insurance does not cover business use, then the employee will be covered by the business policy, for third party only

5. Third Party Cover
The business policy is for Third Party only and all claims whilst using the business policy will be dealt with as such. This means that the cost of any damage to an employee’s car will not be covered by the policy whether caused by the employee or another road user. Royal Mail will only cover the cost of the repairs to the third party. Where the employees private policy is extended to include business use the private insurer should handle the claim for damages to the employee’s vehicle.

No dont do this as you are taking a big risk.

Firstly if you have an accident or worse kill someone (your fault or not) and you have not followed the RM bond to the letter (they WILL wiggle out of it if possible) then your are well and truely screwed as you are uninsured.

If for any reason you have mail stolen from your car there is a good chance you will lose your job, ive seen this many times.

I once used my car (in fact a borrowed car as mine was off the road) and it got broken into (wrecked inside) and the mail stolen. I was lucky to keep my job at the time (no bloody chance now) and ended up with a 5 year last chance warning and a smashed up car to fix. MUGS GAME

But Fish people read this stuff and actually do use thier cars without correct insurance to make a bit of time here and there and then regret it for years if they screw up and find they are not insured.

Today a few car users at my office finished 2 hrs (yes 2) before me because i used a trolley and helped to kept a support driver in a job. My own car was happly parked up safe and sound off the road waiting for me to drive home. It aint worth it even for 2 hours
