Gold Labels

Have noticed a large and increasing number of packets/flats with these large gold label 'stamps' Is this a new thing if so whats the benefit?

Sounds about right! The way that RM ensure that its gets paid is just plain voodoo to me! I've seen some packets with just a hand stamp.

I can't remember the last time I saw a white horizon label. They have had the gold ones for ages.

Yes, but just copying them is no good, you have to get them behind the Post office counter or accepted from a postbox.

Nothing to do with the size of the packet, stamped mail is accepted in a normal posting box, these horizon labels, meter franked, PPI and DSA are not - it's as simple as that .

Next time you empty a box or when you tip a bag from a collection, take a good look at the contents. There will be a good mixture of what should be there and what shouldnt. Nobody at a mail centre takes a blind bit of notice, realising that there will be misdeliveries, missorts etc in there. An item of horizon would never be noticed.

Having never worked on collections or in a Mail Centre I will take your word on that, but surely "An item of horizon" is significant. If there were dozens or hundreds of them, not a single one, then surely someone would think something was amiss and start questioning it.

I occasionally do overtime in a mail centre and i was surprised the first time that i worked on a cfc how much stuff that shouldnt be there was tipped on the belt, nobody turned a blind bit of notice. Just landed up being chucked out the side of the machine to be manually presorted. Franked mail would be the very evident ( office workers just bunging in the nearest box) horizon very common as individual items probably in the hundreds. Any large amount tipped out of one bag would raise a few eyebrows but only if the dim could be bothered to do any thing with it, if it was busy then it would be sent on its merry way thru the system
