39 HOUR WEEK

Can anyone please fill me in on the logic of a 39 hour week. Is this supposed to constitute a pay rise? In my office all it means is we can start booking O/T an hour earlier as in our rural office, few of us get the job done on time and extend on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining because it'll be exta money for me and great fun when our manager cries about the amount of O/T being booked. But seriously... how does RM think it will save money by reducing the FT working week?

I think it was the useless union pushing for a SWW not RM
And it's a payrise because it increases you hourly rate.
Does give PT an actual payrise without working overtime.

It came from a Union motion at conference probably some years ago where the working week was to be reduced to 35 hours - the argument over the years has been whether that was going to be Net or Gross hours. with the 39hr week and 5 breaks of 40 minutes - means we are nearly at the net target.

There is a hidden benefit though - when an office goes to 39hr ww the part time staff get a 2.5% pay rise to bring everyone to the same hourly rate. So if you are a FT working 40 hours on a 39 hour week you also get a payrise.

The one thing I am not sure of is the 40-50 hour OT rate now paid from the 39th hour.

We are about to have the CSS machines installed next week and to start training on the 28th for live sequencing on the 7th March. If anyone has had them installed and up and running when did the 39 hour week come into operation? We believe the night shift who are about to start as operators should only do 39 hours per week and the others should catch up when the revision is complete. As there is to be 4 x 10 hr shifts it would mean a finish 15 minutes "early".

DV, we had our machines installed last November. The f/t operators work a 39 hour week, but there is no sign of the rest of the office following.

Yep, that's what happens in my office. When the rest of the office do finally go to 39 hours it will more than likely be finishing 12 minutes earlier than usual. Well worth it. Unlike, say for example, finishing an hour earlier on a Saturday.

Thanks for that pinstripe, I am hoping that our office will follow suit. It makes sense to set out the shift pattern, as it will be, at the outset............it may become difficult to change later.

start 11 til 9 seg all boxes for the machine 8batches 1 per york 2 hrs on 2hrs off bit of sorting and segging of d2d more mail at 5.30 back on css, clean machine little bit of this and that then home to bed
