PT or not as the case may be

Post by westham67 »

Could anyone answer this question.Im on a 22.5hr contract 3m at a time. The duty i have been given is not possible to do in this time.So since last year i have been starting at 7.30 eg 2hr a day extra, fine i havnt a problem with this apart from holidays etc pro rata, but 10 hrs a week handy... they have just told me from now on mon,tue weds,9.30 start. thurs , fri , sat, 7.30 start . It seems that RM want it both ways. The question is if i say im only going to work my contracted hrs will they renew my contract, and is this allowed ,

Afraid you have fallen foul of RMs latest scheme to get the job done as cheaply as possible 67  They've been practicing it for years and I'm sure most of your colleagues are on Part-Time contracts. They may be 30 hr, 20 hr or any number RM choose. We all get mucked about, and worry about losing any available Over-Time if we upset a spiteful manager. :mad
The only people who can effectively resist their bullying tactics, and not suffer too much financially, are your Full-Time colleagues. That's why RM try as hard as they can to get rid of them and don't like recruiting anyone Full-Time.

Suggest you look for a second job to make up the short fall and resign yourself to only working your contracted hours. Then the pressure's off you to keep on the DIMs good side and you can fight your own corner without worrying. They rely on everyone Needing the Over-Time to keep them in line. :no no

Unfortunately they don't have to renew your contract, and I'm sure that's what's worrying you. That's why they only give you a 12 week "Temporary" contract  These contracts were brought in so that they could get guys to cover any duties while they were bringing in the new Revisions and then when they'd got everything sorted they could get rid of them without too much trouble (if they didn't need them). Good business sense but very cynical. :no no

Expect no loyalty from Royal Mail and try to get yourself a more reliable job.

Ride the storm until you've got your permenant contract - then work the hours you want, if your manager plays up then work your basic contract and find something else to supplement alongside this.

like he said. and dont think doing overtime will push them to make you perm. it might in 0.01 percent of managers, but mostly there thinking of their bonus. the bonus which you get them tbh. just carry on and work to that arrangement. i know it sucks at holidays and bonus;s but get the work while you can. people are alwasy leaving RM which gives the temps a better chance at staying on.
