What's it like to work as a Royal Mail postman? I would like to know if it would be suitable for a 19 year old male who doesn't have a car.
Will I have transport difficulties?
How early will the work begin / will I have to wake up?
Living in London, how far will I have to travel?
What is your opinion about working for Royal Mail? How stressful, how much enjoyment, how difficult, any benefits, why to take this over a supermarket role?

i would use it as a last resort or stop gap.
things have changed for the worse and i dont see any sort of reversal in the future.

people always say look for another job but RM have a lot of people with really long service so it cant be that bad. I have enjoyed my service in delivery's and distrubution over my years but it is changing for the worst, you can only expect part time now so be prepared to get a second job in the afternoon. Alot of delivery men dont start while after 6 now so you dont have to be up too early like in the old day's (4 am for me to get the bus at 4.30) plus you get used to the early starts. You dont need a car and shouldn't use 1 on delivery's people who do that have caused alot of the problem with the delivery side of things, and dont start before your time just so you can Finish on time you will be giving RM a tonne of cash over the years, and remember they cant make you work past your contracted hours CUT OFF!!!!!!. Take the job and see how it goes. And join the union.

Don't listen to the doom and gloom mongers on here. This is a great job with really good work mates who will help you out when ever they can. The managers on the whole are a decent bunch just doing their job to the best of their abilities. The people at the top have the company interest at heart and are working really hard to turn the company round. Join the union because they also are doing a great job for the membership and are looking after our interests. The job is physically demanding.
It is a lot harder than it used to be and will probably get harder still.
Our managers are mostly knobends.
We used to be a public service but now they are trying to run a business and failing.
We are going through a lot of changes (and sometimes we just change back again) and change is always difficult for some people to accept.
That said, once you get out of the office you don't have anyone watching over you.
If you are fit the job is still OK.
It pays quite well compared to the minimum wage and unless you do something mind-numbingly stupid you won't lose your job.
There's nothing I would rather do.

The job is on a downward spiral and isn't what it used to be..even in the short length of time I've served (5 years), the terms and conditions have been eroded, bullying and coercion are commonplace management tactics (something you can expect to be a magnet to, as a newcomer), and the workload leaves you too tired at the end (middle?) of the day to do anything else.
In saying that though, it's better than being a dole scrounger (just) and probably pays more than a supermarket job, and if you're still living at home then at least it's a few quid in your pocket to go out and get blootered at the weekend.
