re-directions and surcharges

1. re-directions.

all the time letters come to our office, with the address scribbled out, and another next to it saying, plz re-direct to this address (which is different to the return address). what do you do. possible reasons. a. the guy couldn't be arsed putting a sticker on it so just wrote it on, or b. did the guy just run out of re-direction stickers and wrote on it because the DOMs couldn't be arsed requesting more in. or c. is it somebody trying to actually get away without paying or d. there is no official re-direction but the written address on the letter is the persons new address.

i want to just return to sender or surcharge but there is a good chance it could be an actual re-direction which a customer is paying for. your thoughts?

2. surcharges. does anybody else not surcharge NHS hospitals because you think when they pay for it its coming from the taxpayers pocket. i just surcharge private companies.

Under the USO we have to redeliver anything as long as it's not from a business.

Its most likely that the present occupier is forwarding a mail for a previous occupier or tenant.

As regards use of official redirection stickers, some posties are too lazy to reorder (mostly floaters that think it is not my round/job). Or stickers runs out - it happens, including it runs out and there is just a few days or weeks left... I tend to put the mail in the official redirection bag when there is no sticker and then write the address on the bag.

If the redirection is within the same office then postmen might just right the address on the letter and put it on your frame or let you know about it...

Forwarding mail is sometimes abused and I think they probably should all be charged or made to put a stamp on it. As for not surcharging govt, charitable, educational establishments or OAP, I think it is up to your conscience...

I sometimes run out of stickers and admittedly I write on the letter instead - it's usually a case of me having re-ordered stickers but them taking about a fortnight to turn up . What difference does it make when I'm always delivering letters that have been unofficially redirected anyway? What's the point of having an official redirection, full stop?

I thought if the letter had been opened, then unofficially redirected by the house-holder then we can surcharge it?

I agree. We are no longer allowed to arrange unofficial keepsafes with customers as it is deemed as a loss of revenue. I wonder how much money is spent reprocessing/delivering unofficial redirections.
Secondly, I've noticed where people have an official redirection and maybe don't like the look of something that has been forwarded onto them, they will write gone away on it and stick it back in the post. This goes through the system again returning to yours truly to be returned to sender with a red sticker on it.

its allowed a free redirection under them circumstances as long as the envelope hasnt been opened :ncfo

The money they waste and their gross ineficiency means the NHS would be top of my list for surcharging.
