osteoarthritis in toe

Dr thought I had a stress fracture after all that walking on the ice an snow this winter but x-ray revealed early stages of osteoarthritis at base of big toe. Not told manager yet as he not the most understanding!! coping with diclofenic but it is slowing me down considerably. Just wondering what to do (if anything yet). Also do you think this could be called an industrial injury as the physical demands of the job have almost certainly contributed?

Diclofenac works for me but lots on here who have used it don't get on with it.Try and rest for a while,i have the same problem and it usually helps.
At times i have to wear trainers like reeboks which have the soft toe bit,but i would suggest getting a docs note on that so you cover yourself.

Try Celebrex...worked better for me than diclofenac,Naproxen or Ibuprofen

I have a similar problem but after 2 operations my toe is fusing together now with arthritis. Indoor work for me for 4 weeks then ref to ATOS for possible IHR

You could however be lucky as you have caught this problem early! My advice would be not to wear trainers as i did because it hurts when bending? Try a stiff pair of walking boots i.e something that prevents your toe bending and look for a pair that has a rocker type sole. If you visit your GP ask to be ref to your local orthotics specialist, tell them what job you do and these people will help you with insoles for your footwear

i have flare ups of this type in my toes. diclofenac used to work for me but no longer do, my doctor put me on a new treatment called Arcoxia. its fantastic! you only take 1 a day and sometimes that 1 is enough. ask your Dr for it, you will see a vast difference.

Thank you everyone for advice.Thought I was alone but it seems to be a common problem doesnt it?!! Good to know of some other treatments for the pain too. Dont know whether to tell manager - just give him excuse to say I'm not capeable of doing my job!

Actually it's the Equality Act now.
But what it means is that you should be offered a reasonable ajustment to stay in employment IF you so wish,but Royal Mail are bullyboys and don't like cripples so expect a rough time and the usual there are no indoor jobs for you ....Goodbye routine.
