Can I cancel my own annual leave ?

Post by Tommase »

Have been told today that holiday that was booked for me (not requested) in order to fill all avaliable spaces in the annual leave calendar, must be taken ?

I dont want the annual leave as I will lose my SA rest day, and that if I want to work I can go to another office in the sector and our leave reserve (with less service) will do my duty ? When I was leave reserve I was farmed out to countless offices when we had a full quota of staff.

Im not impressed ! :no no

Your input as always is appreciated

I was of the understanding that you could roll a max of 5 days to next years leave :hmmmm
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

If you don't book it yourself then it's allocated for you.

Even annual leave that is requested and if cancelled will have this same precedent !

holidays have been a disaster in our office too this time around.

i have worked out that if all staff in our office bought the max (6weeks) leave that there simply wouldnt be enough weeks in the year for everybody to take them.

as from next year no staff will be allowed december off due to the flu virus and sickness leave.

the situation is clearly being mismanaged.

summer hols for people with children is a big issue for us as there simply isnt enough time to go round.

i say bring in a few students in the summer and let them do half duties, surely it would be money saving too.

Thats the issue, many of us have purchased extra leave and the only time remaining is off peak time (so to speak) management want the entire year filled with no empty spaces, or overlap !

the underlying problem (for us at least) is people working so much overtime.
if they all worked their hours starting tomorrow within a fortnight management would be forced to employ more staff leaving more cover.
we really are doing it to ourselves.

There is NO right to be able to buy a 6 week holiday entitlement..... I had to put it in writing and request it. Coz it was such a long time ago it was O.K'd but people have recently been turned down with the same request. I know that RM can seems stupid at times but they aint THAT stoopid!

Something must of changed, it can't be a max 6 weeks any more.

A colleague in our office received a letter from HR asking him if he wanted to buy an additional week making it 7 weeks !!!!

He did not request the additional week, nor did he enquire about it, the letter just turned up out of the blue.

Part of the pay and mod agreement with the summer lapsing is you have extra holiday spaces booked.
So in the summer if you are lapsing you should have extra slots.

It seems quite a lot of the replies are going off topic... ???

Anyway, I will love to do the same thing as the OP. My manager will likely cooperate, I think. I have a week every month for the last 3 months. I am only enetiles to about 4 weeks the year.

The issue is that my manager has booked my holidays for me because I forgot to fill the holiday request form because I was actually on a 2 weeks holiday when the deadline came... My fault!

However, I really do not want my holiday to start next month and I want a 2 weeks block; which I have not got because the manager saw this as an opportunity to slot me anywhere in the leave rota.

Tis true (off topic) ! But also why should I be forced to go to another office when the leave reserve with less service should be the one to make way ! I was always the lowest on the rung when I was reserve, whats changed ...

FFS Postman, we've had our summer leave reduced this year, only 5 when it used to be 8 (not that I care, I still got decent weeks).

OP, reading your post again, I can see that your manager has offered you a compromise.

I dont know whether you can simply refuse to take an annual leave and come to the office (to do your duty or any other) despite a manager not wanting you there. I dont even know what my manager will do with my leave - he could simply refuse to change things then I wonder?

It must have been a mistake by HR. I don't think you can buy over 6 weeks.
If you could I certainly would. I might email HR to check that out.
