What do we mean by a "sell out" ?

In this context it basically means not getting as good a deal as everyone was hoping for. Or in the worst case letting RM do everything they want and we only get 1 or 2 concessions.

I don't think there' really such a thing as a union sell out - all unions are there to negotiate with management, that's their role in this society, so when there's no negotiation they do everything with the purpose of getting back to the table, even if there's nothing there. In other words the sell-out is pretty much there from the start - in this case it actually was there when they promised to call off action for talks - it's built in to the whole structure of how industrial relations works.

The only way this'll be won is if people are prepared to take action outside the union and against the leadership where necessary. Things don't seem to be solid enough for all-out unofficial action (although obviously solid enough for some!), but work-to-rule, holding mass meetings, making links with workers elsewhere, and wildcats if it starts going to s**t, all that is possible.

any veterans of '71 on here? were we sold out then? was it just about pay or pay and conditions? was the strike suspended at any point during meaningful negotiations?

We asked them to negotiate, which they would not. We asked for a voice in their plan's, They didn't give it to us.
Since industrial action they now have given us that chance. Because we have fought for it !
