Resident asks me not to ring his bell!

Post by Glyno »

I deliver to a small block of 6 flats, where usually only 2 or 3 of the occupants receive mail regularly.

If say, I only have mail for numbers 2, 4 & 6, then I only press their buzzers (located outside) to gain entry. However, the occupant of one of these flats asked me the other day if I could stop ringing his bell as it wakes their young baby!

The thing is, this occupant tends to have mail EVERY day, sometimes being the only resident who does. In this instance, would I simply not press his buzzer (as requested by him), or any of the other occupants' and return the mail as unable to gain entry, or do I buzz an occupant who isn't receiving mail and incur their wrath should I wake them?

I did ask my line manager... he just shrugged :arrrghhh

Thanks

explain to him/her that the only other option would be a call and collect.
your DOM should have said this to you.

is there any way you could get a key to gain access without having to ring for any of the residents, maybe get one of your line managers to contact whoever owns the building telling them about the access issue

Management responsibility! He just shrugged - unbelievable!!! If the customer had complained about you; he would have not shrugged but told you off.

You dont want to go antagonising or upsetting customers. But you should have explained to them your dilemma and offer possible solution. They can come to DO to collect or ask where they want the mail delivered or provide some key code or key/fob to get into the flat

Just asking all respondents generally, would it be a good idea to ask the customer to provide a letter to lineo specifically detailing that they do not want their bull rung? Just as an arse covering exercise, in case customer expects something on a day no one else in the block gets mail, and they get arsey that their SD or whatever doesn't turn up ( not that any customer would ever be so fickle and demanding  )
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

What you want to happen is the 3 day rule, fingers crossed you can't get in for 3 days then you send the stuff back and the s**t hits the fan. :pray

I had exactly the same problem middle last year... woman would come out shouting that I'd woken the baby... "don't bloody ring my bell ring somebody elses bell" I explained that if nobody else had mail and/or she was the only one with mail it would get sent back as inaccessible! The thought that she might lose some important benefit info/giro etc had her saying "well....just tap the bell then!"

Most people round here are in (as in unemployed) but won't open doors but complain violently when their mail is sent back.... what can you do????

in my d.o after 3 days without access to stair the mail is held in callers office,a letter from dom is taped to stair door stating they can collect their mail until such times as a they can adjust service button time or provide a key for postman.the problem is usually solved pretty quickly after this.

So what is the official line on time locked flats then. There seems to be different policies in different offices.

And are you meant to endorse each and every letter for the flats you can't get into or just the first one?

Here, here!

Not getting in for 3 days is hardly great as you have to sort the letters 3 times, carry them out and back 3 times and endorse them 3 times!

I really wish RM had a hard and fast rule on this.... I'd say 3 days then its the tenants responsibility to either collect from the office OR provide key or access

In my office it's 3 days,i thought that was the rule anyway, some of our guys kill them off some don't.
To be honest i've never killed anything off like that i just keep trying to re deliver them.
I don't like the 3 day rule and i think taping a letter to the door informing them like redspart says should be the way to settle it.

Just bring her mail back to the office every day. After a couple of weeks whe will phone up to complain and you can say she didn't want the bell rung so you did as she asked. Pretty sure she wont moan about you ringing her bell after that :whistle Even if you gain access to the flats by ringing someone elses bell with their mail, do not deliver her mail. She cannot expect someone else to be disturbed just for her own gain and needs to be taught this lesson! :so there

I had a guy rant and rave at me for ringing his bell because he worked nights and he said ring someone elses bell even if I had mail for him.... he didn't get any letters for a month, then miraculously the lock fell off the door and it was always left open :nana :dance
