why are we modernising?

Post by kimski1976 »

so the government has said that unless royal mail modernizes then were going down. but i don't understand why the need. royal mail, a public company, actually makes a profit. there are some wasters who don't care, but most of us do. delivering letters and packets isn't brain surgery. why has the public bought into the governments allegations that mail has dropped. for me, it seems heavier than ever. packets and mail. and who was the actual guru , that one genius, mastermind who thought, i know, 2 posties in a van. do we know who planned that fantasy idea up in his/her head?

and is it just me but is sequenced just a total waste of time? maybe one day if you can get 100 percent straight from the machine then it would be effective (at the cost of most employess jobs). but we now have 3 deliveries a day now. we send 2 drivers every morning to pick up the sequenced. which half the time the machines have failed so there is none. 2.5 million out of the job? thats barely hit the surface with what were about to see. i know this is very negative of me and its the same everywhere, but i just worry for my family and of course all my fellow colleagues. i thought i would be in this job a long time but i guess profit comes before loyalty.

And when are the rest of Europe being deregulated?

At least that way we (as in Royal Mail) can go in steal all the good contracts from them like they are doing over here.

Well they need a reason to sell RM and if they cant find one then they'll engineer one.

From our Point of view there is no need to privatise. From the Free Markerteers, pro Globalisation Racket and the Liberalisers then privatisation is not a reason its a solution on how to release the capital into their own hands.

They learnt a lesson from Goebels - "Repeat a lie often enough and it will be accepted as the truth". That along with the alleged engineered decline all make it easier for the sheeples to accept that privatisation will cure all the ills of a once great institution.

That was probably Crozier, Leighton who have now left - or one of their acolytes.

Yes but again your looking at it from a receiver or worker point of view, where quite understandably you think modernisation means a quicker, more efficient service that meets the need of the public. In actual fact Modernisation means easier access for competitors (hence later deliveries) more profit for the free marketeers selling the machines, and of course the by product of being able to run down the service before privatisation is a handy extra benefit.

Correct, after all your talking about thatchers children where the accumulation of wealth is the be all and end all. Of course it helps when politicians of all hues keep repeating that we cant tackle the excessive wealth of the few as they may leave the UK and take that wealth with them. Some even believe that the "trickle down effect" actually works. :left:

2011 for some - and IIRC 2013 for countries that have joined the EU in the last few years.

Unlikely. Most if not all EU member countries are protecting the incumbent as much as they can by passing various laws and protecting as many monopolies as they can get away with. Also RM are not really strategically set up to go into competition in the letters side of the business in Europe. They are in Parcels and GLS is for and already does as a subsidiary of RM.

What a load of mangled tosh. All businesses have to modernise in some shape or form, especially when modernisation means automation, with it the inherent saving on staff costs.

Whether you believe RM can achieve any savings with it's piece-meal approach to planning and staff issues, is another matter entirely, but that's RM in 2011....

There was a need to modernise, particularly in some areas where nothing had changed in years. Whether automation was necessary on this scale is a moot point. You then have to look at the modernisation process and ask if it is actually achieving the objective.............if savings wasn't the purpose then what was?

It becomes mangled tosh when you selectively quote various parts of posts that fill your agenda or aid you in making your own point.

Yes I agree all business have to modernise and even automate, and if you had included the previous sentence to the one you quoted you can see what I think Modernisation should achieve.

The things most in need of modernisation are the Royal Mail Management and the CWU Heirarchy. The management are using the same systems that were utilised during the Thatcher era to reduce manpower by bullying, harrasing and mentally torturing the workforce into submission. CWU Heirarchy are rather similar to the Animal Farm Book in which the animals took over the farm from the farmer. The stronger animals then negotiated there way to the head of the pack and then proceeded to make themselves cosy at the expense of the other animals. In a modern world none of these events should occur. Unfortunately this world will never be modern and forward thinking whilst the greed of man persists.

Don't put it on to me TBT. You wrote it,but it's poorly written and it makes little sense. Please don't give it your usual "selective post" riposte.
I just highlight the part I'm replying to, but you're the one who posted it.

I didn't put it onto you  . I explained my position on the points you raised. I also pointed out, or at least tried to that selective quoting changed the message I was trying to get across. If you saw or read into it anything else beyond that, then I apologise all I was trying to do was set the record straight.

Anyway this is going off topic, anything earth shattering to put forward beyond a critique of my posting style, interesting as it was.

Can you actually define modernisation as you understand it, because as I understand it, modernisation is synonomous with the progress of a group ( in this case those living in the UK ), and yet if you ask any member of the public, or any colleague if the modernisation of the last 5 years has brought any progress, I doubt you will get any ringing endorsements of the changes....but that's under my definition, & I'd like to know how you define "modernisation", just to get some context on your posts.

I say we are not modernising, but transforming RM through the greater use of vans, trollies and automation.

Wev'e had machines for years these are just more up to date and are ponderously slow hence the later starts, 'tman very selective' and again showing his subserviance of the masters that he no doubt doffs his hat every morn too
the term modernisation is covering up the obbsession for slimming the operation down in readiness for a sell off. Accelerated recently hence the speed that royal fail stooges are floundering at i'll thought out and unworkable schemes
too get us too flog our arses off for little wages. But i'm sure over the coming weeks / months they are going to rue the day when they though we'd sit back and let them screw us into the ground

Axeman is right on slimming down although that was going on even before suggestions of a sell off. The biggest expense is the wage bill and at mo, RM can't keep up with pension deficit. If you have to ask why the service needs to transform, then look beyond these shores. Its the same everywhere. Modernisation isn't just machinery.
