Posties using there own cars
In our office (SPDO) several posties use there car. Some because they are lazy, but several because they have no choice.
For some, it is a 7 mile trip back to the village where they were once based but relocated into our office. It turns out they are entitled to petrol money and are now receiving this, it was only back dated a few months rather than a couple of years worth !!
Now to my question.
Our pain of a supervisor has told these few posties, because they now get petrol money, they have to take out ALL parcels, including over sized and tracked. The tracked are pre scanned in the office as delivered and then sent out with the postie using his car.
Now I was once told several years ago by a manager, that using a car was just the same as using a trolley, so the over sized would still go out in a van.
Can someone confirm which is correct.
Do the posties using cars and receiving petrol money have to take out the over sized ?

Re: Posties using there own cars
The travelling allowance they receive is for travel to and from work NOT to use their car on delivery.
No-one in Royal Mail is forced to use their own car on delivery.
The Royal Mail insurance bond does not cover the delivery of parcels using your car.
If you do not have specific insurance to cover this you are breaking the law.
Your manager is an arse!
...and pre-scanning tracked items as delivered is something a rep should put a stop to...it's a QofS failure.
And your manager is an arse!...i know i already said that but it's worth saying twice.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Royal Mail pay the petrol allowance for them to travel to and from there delivery point, from there on, they are supposed to walk, but they by there own choice use the car for delivery, but this is not in question.
What is in question is, now because they receive the petrol allowance, they are being expected to take out over sized and all tracked items. Where as before they received the allowance the over sized and tracked went out in the van.

Really can't be bothered to read all the threads on here because I cannot see any situation where Posties can justify using the own vehicle.

Correct me if you can !

What RM should be doing or should have done is supply another van, but I think they have more chance at winning the loto.

Apart from normal supervisor duties, he has non.Wessex wrote:John B , you mention the word supervisor in your posts. What official status does this person actually have ?
The things this man THINKS he can do is unreal, it would seriously boil your blood if you knew half the things he thinks he can do and get away with.
He once tried and succeeded in stopping several posties over time claims. I only found out several weeks after this happened.
He had no real reason for not submitting the over time, other than it looked bad for the office.

Royal Mail do not pay petrol allowance to travel to and from your delivery point...that would be seen as encouraging the use of PCOD and they don't...they allow it.John_B wrote: Royal Mail pay the petrol allowance for them to travel to and from there delivery point, from there on, they are supposed to walk, but they by there own choice use the car for delivery, but this is not in question.
RM Private Cars on Delivery Procedure
Q29. Does Royal Mail encourage employees to use their private cars?
A. No. We will not stop you as long as the journey is legally insured and that you have met all the other criteria. If you do not want to, that is fine by us. Official acceleration, either by bus, bike or crew bus, will be provided as appropriate and as planned for your delivery.

Q23. Could I be required or instructed to take second pouches for another delivery officer, if I go past the pouch box?
A. No. Neither of the insurance polices would cover this and you would therefore be driving your car without insurance. It requires a higher class of business cover to be authorized to perform “drops” of goods. All pouches will be delivered to pouch boxes by official acceleration

John, you have my sympathies.I worked in rural SPDO 's for around 10 years so I know where you are coming from. It's a totally different rulebook. My advice would to tread carefully as rural managers tend to have their proxies in each office and they can make your life difficult as I have found out on more than one occasion.John_B wrote:Apart from normal supervisor duties, he has non.Wessex wrote:John B , you mention the word supervisor in your posts. What official status does this person actually have ?

So does the same procedure count for tracked items and over sized parcels and specials ?fishtank wrote:

Re: Posties using there own cars
Losing the will to live.
RM can not force you to use your own vehicle for delivery.
If it's a long work to start your round it just gives you less time to deliver mail. Work out how long it takes to walk there and back and use any spare time to deliver mail then bring the rest back. Just be sure to inform DOM of what you going to do before you go out.
They'll soon find a way of getting you there quicker. If you continue to use your car they won't.
You should realise they can cut duties because of people using cars !!!!!
