Dear Colleagues,

CWU Women’s Conference – Saturday 5th February 2011

Branches would wish to know that the agenda for the forthcoming CWU Women’s Conference being held in Edinburgh on Saturday 5th February 2011 has now been published on the website. Hard copies of the agenda will be sent to all delegates that have registered in the normal way.

Credential cards for delegates and voting cards for this conference will be issued on the Saturday morning at registration prior to the conference opening.

Visitors attending the conference are able to gain entrance by production of their membership card but it would be helpful for administration purposes if branches could register their names with this office if they have not done so.

Where the hell do you think the labour representation movements came from ?

Surely solidarity is with the workers generally rather than their specific gender, abililty or identity, as in the term "union". i.e "we are united" rather than "we are balkanised"

Ok, here's how I see it: Yes there should be a conference for Women to bring any continuing discrimination to light. Just as we should (and indeed do) have conferences for other groups who're discriminated against.

But what confuses me about this. Is that as far as I can see, there ISN'T any discrimination against Women in RM anymore. Obviously, things could be different in Deliveries. But indoors, we all get treated the same. We have Women doing senior duties (once known as PHGs), and we've also got senior Managers who're Women. And don't forget, we've all got Moya to deal with now. Does that sound like they're still discriminated against?
There was a time when this wasn't the case. I can still remember Women being looked down upon by many, as being weak, and basically not up to the job. But those days are gone (at least in my experience).

Just to add my voice - I think that there should be a Womens Conference not because they are discriminated against, they are, but no longer at a institutional level anymore, but because there are various issues that can only be dealt with at such a conference and of course to stop any discrimination starting at corporate level.


Does the conference need to be stand alone one or could it be as part of a coordinated conference with other Unions now that is probably worthy of debate.

As to other "minority" conferences do we need them - again my answer would be yes but would they be stronger and more dynamic if instead of having a CWU conference solely for that group they had a TUC chaired conference with other Unions.
