Never been on the sick in the 10 years I’ve worked at RM but was just wondering.

Do you have to tell your manager the reason why you have been off work sick. Some people may want to just keep all their personal medical history to themselves and the medical staff treating them and not disclose it to a manager for a number of reasons.

I also don’t think the various employee documentation is kept as secure as in a medical facility. Many a time I've seen it just chucked on a managers desk for anyone to see

Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

i had a op last year, asked the manager to keep it quiet as slightly embaressing , next day it was all around the office , i didnt tell anyone , so how did that happen ,???

Its EXACTLY the same in my office nothing but nothing says confidential. Its not just medical stuff either.... makes me sooooo angry! Personally I'd refuse to tell RM locally if I had an issue that I wanted to keep private.

I suggest you remind your DOM/Managers part of of our contract of employment states, matters arising from our employment should be treated in the strictest confidence. Try putting a greivance in stating breach of contract.

When i've phoned in it's usually run of the mill,a cold (Man flu which is a killer obviously) bad back ect,personally i can't see the problem with it.

If it's something perhaps embarrassing or serious in that you don't want it shouted out as per previous posts in the thread then tell them you are unwell and leave it at that either till you come back or you have to send in a docs cert.
Then you could phone up the manager if you would be away for a long time and tell him to keep it to himself as per the 'strictest confidence' issues.

Although obliged to let the compnay know your reason for absence, what you divuldge to them is covered by the data protection act, and they have no right to tell anyone.

Alot of the time its not about actually telling anyone rather leaving paperwork out or speaking too loudly on the phone when others are within earshot etc

Sadly this is true as ive never known anyone to be off sick for more than a few days without most people knowing.. Its prob the same where ever you work

so basically what you are all saying is that there is no way of keeping your medical complain secret from management. You have got to tell them at some point
