One of my friends was an engineer on the mail rail down there. More than anything else I think they closed it for health and safety reasons as it was a dangerous place to be!

I think the reason that was given was that posted items are much larger these days than when the Post Office Railway was opened and items the size of bicycles couldn't be dropped down the spiral chutes and fit into the trains' containers. In the old days it would have been mainly bags of letter bundles and small packets in the mail.

Blame Thatcher she took the mail from the TPO and shoved it on the roads

I got talking to an old guy at a bus stop outside Mount Pleasant a few weeks back. He had been in the Merchant Navy during WW2,
and had worked as a Fireman at Farringdon Fire Station, which is opposite Mount Pleasant MC, after the war. He said that German bombers had targetted what they thought was the route of the Post Office Railway as German Intelligence thought it was being
used to transport ammunition for anti-aircraft guns across London. Wouldn't have done much damage to the POR though as it's 70 feet below ground.
Some of the POR tunnels were used to store art from the National Gallery during WW2.

But Mail Rail (Post Office Railway) was closed in May 2003 - under Blair.
