lost mail

got home from work today, walked the dogs and, as I came back down the drive,noticed a sodden envelope in the flower border. Picked it up and its a letter addressed to me containing a cheque I`ve been expecting. dated 4/1/11 so don`t know how long it`s been there, question is, should I have a word with my fellow postie about it or just let it go as I`ve now got the cheque and there`s no harm done. Thoughts?

here here ,we are only human,with the volumes of mail lately,if you dropped a letter you would hardly notice.

If it's a one off I wouldn't say a word . When your carrying so much mail it's inevitable that on the rare occasion something will be dropped . I found a letter in a bush next to a front door and I'd been on the duty the previous day and I'm a perfect Postie .

let it go there is not a postman that has not dropped a letter or two in there time and if they say they have not then they have just not seen it. i know that i have even dropped packets in my time

I have taken to sewing my mail bags in the past or use the yellow inner sleeve (pain) to make sure small packets dont drop out or to secure missorts or P739 recorded/special delivery letters. I will probably have a quiet word if I bump into him...

I actually have a sort of problem with my postie (perhaps new postie) that keeps leaving my gate open. I am paranoid about my gates being open. I am single and have been burgled in the past (and gate open is a tell tale sign). Also there is the issue of litter being blown in and stray dogs and opportunists.

I have complained in the past but this time round, I have been thinking about another complaint or escalating the complaint becos I have polite notices asking for my gate to be shut and it is continually ignored with impunity. I know its the postie not leafleteer as I have been on holiday and it is only open when have mail.

My postie just leaves his mailbag in the middle of the pavement (with my mail in it) whilst he goes off for up to 10 mins to do a loop. Some times on a rest day ive had to walk around it whilst out with the dog. But do i say anything "NO" , his a 15 year man and its his business, his walk and of course it will be his neck if the mail goes missing.

I would let it go this time.

I dont understand why people say I should relax about the postman leaving my gate open. Its not polite for him to leave it open in the first place - leave things as you find them; that is what I do.

Its not an imaginary problem; I get litter blown into my garden and if the gate is left open for a week (like if I am on hols), it becomes very obvious that I am not around. I live on a busy end terrace which has a lot of school and shoppers traffic and people know my movement.

I will definitely report him and take it up as far as I can next time it happens. I get reported for far less by my customers. And I do a council estate with about 350 gated houses - its a pain but thats part of the job. Even those that expect me to wind a rope round their gate or gate post have to be respected or else it will be a conudct issue in my office.

Report him if you wish as that is your right as a Customer but remember how you feel when customers report you.

By the way it does really seem an important issue for you so just in case you missed my earlier suggestion - why not buy and fit a gate spring then you won't ever have the problem again. I mean if you get your way and take it as far as you can and the current postie is moved, suspended or sacked then whats to stop the next postie repeating the whole sorry saga all over again. Your solution is temporary, though perhaps satisfying, mine is a little more permanent.

BTW I agree all posties should leave gates as they found, however my duty has mostly double gates (1 gate a short path and another gate) so that for 2 addresses I open and close 3 gates - sometimes I just cant remember if they were open or not when I went through them. I don't think its a deliberate act by your postie, unless you have wound him up, merely inattention or forgetfulness. Its obviously an important issue for you so why not go for the permanent solution.

"PEOPLE KNOW MY MOVEMENTS" What the F*ck?? people lie dead in their homes for months only being discovered because of the foul smell or leaking fluids.... and YOU think people are monitoring your movements??? Stop listening to those voices in your head and get some serious professional help!
