Bit of a weird question...

I know we can take a year out, and realise this would be in exceptional circumstances, but...

I've got a relative who's taking a year out of University and taken work in the USA. He's been there since last year, and is due back this year.
So, the question:
Will he stil be entitled for a Uni "grant" or financial aid from the UK whilst he works abroad? - As he is being paid, as I would have thought not.
Apparently, he says he is. ( Full of rubbish I think! )
But, there is "talk" of the USA work being related to his Uni course, but we're not sure, as we only have his word for this.
I personally think to be paid AND to be get a Uni AS WELL grant is total crap myself.
Has anyone done this or know someone who has?

bollocks me thinks but i have known to be wrong sometimes.

if he is on a work placement / internship.....no grant or anything studenty cos he's on break (u've said 'year' = '12months', means not student for the year).
if he is spending a semister / year in other uni (school type thingy) as exchange student then he probabaly will be.
