Cutting Off Guidelines

Hi, Been cutting off since new year and managers hate it but are gradually starting to accept it, area rep involved last week and he gave DOM a right dressing down in front of me :)

Anyway, when you are going to cut what exactly should you do:-

I do this:-

Me: Manager, I'm not able to work on today so I will be finishing on time, what would you like me to leave behind?
Manager: Why can't you work on?
Me: Cos a I don't want to and b I have something to do.
Manager: How about working through your break?
Me: No, I will be taking my break out on my round thank you.
Manager: What do you think you will get done?
Me: Well, it will be 10am before I put a letter in and I know I have to put my first letter in at 9am to complete so I think I will get to ???????
Manager: You're taking the piss ain't you? I thought you were quick.
Me: High volumes of mail and more packets than normal means more P739 etc etc etc
Manager: Well, you'll have to leave it in the frame then but I reckon you can do ?????????????
Me: I'm happy to take it out to ?????????? but if I get to 2pm and I haven't done it I will be bringing it back, is that OK?
Manager: If you take it you need to deliver it or it's wilful delay.
Me: In that case I will stick with my original prediction of getting to ????????????
Manager: (In sarcastic voice) OK, but you're taking the piss.
Me: OK, see you later then Boss :)

Managers will always tell you you're taking the piss (though never usually in those terms). If you're cutting off, be authoritative and/or insistent (they're not a million miles apart). Don't take what you cannot do and don't accept their bull. They're absolutely powerless to stop you which is why they try and use their 'magicks' to coerce, harass, bully, intimidate or bribe you into completing.

I had almost that exact conversation yesterday. Instead of agreeing on how much to take out I was told to stream mail as I pulled it out the frame. (Leaving DSA and mailsort) It took even longer to get out the door and so there was very time saving overall. I was still over an hour over my time after all that because of the snow. I plan on working to my time from now on so need to get to grips with these types of conversation. Is it right for the DOM to get you to stream out mail every time you say you can't manage or should it be a street or 2 being left for someone else to do on overtime?

Managers dont understand that when cutting off your have to make a educated guess as to how far you will get, its not possible to be precise. One of my former DOMS used to tell us to take out a bit more than you think you will get done just in case you underestimate.

It's simple for us with park&loop.
You just fill up the van when you leave...and fill up a york when you come back.
No need to estimate...under or over.

its scary whats happening... I Felt as if I was going to be sacked when I tried to cut off last week... huge amount of 'verbal' from the managers manager (manager said do what you can). Talk of being interviewed, that I was taking the piss coz there was 'so little' work etc etc

As for the thread, I always get told to stream but I always argue that it doesn't save me anywhere near enough time, usually after 30 minutes of arguing they give in and tell me just to leave what I can't get done (and that usually includes more because of having to fight with them).

you are just sooooooooooooooo lazy! I am sure there is a current hidden scheme to try and push you to do extra for nothing. Is there a competition by each DO DOM to see how many they can get try and get rid of by this harassment!

Update: Been having a cut off interview every day filling in a cut off form, these things are priceless:-

1. Why did you cut off and not complete your duty? Uhh, cos I got to my duty end time and hadn't finished and didn't want to work on for time and a 16th or whatever it is!
2. Do you know your prep rate? No
3. Do you know what your prep rate should be? Yes, 26 a minute cos you told me yesterday, and the day before and the day before
4. Is your delivery frame problematic to you finishing your round? No
etc etc etc etc etc

Takes about 10 minutes to complete and talk about, which puts you further behind for that day!

Then this beauty:-

There was 67,000 items on Monday and you left 220 delivery points, there were 12,000 more items yesterday and you only left 80 delivery points, how do you explain that?, seems to me there is a strong case for wilful delay here!

So they are just dividing the traffic by the number of rounds and that's how many items you got that day, what a crock of s**t, how the hell do they get away with that!

And it's not the mail that's the issue, it's the number of packets as low and behold today I got finished no problem, with half as many packets as Monday and Wednesday when I cut off........f***ing idiots!!!
