can 4 day weeks be taken away once you have them?

Need to know this as we have a park & loop re-sign happening soon and it will be crucial in my decision and long term could cost me a significant amount of money. Currently I'm an AG doing just over 30hrs on a 5 day week. When the re-sign happens I'm senior enough to choose a full time 5 day week job, or an AG job doing 8 hour days.. 4 days a week (i.e 32 hour contract). I would rather go for the 4 day week AG job and use the extra time off to persue My self employed work on the side as it means i have 1 less day a week having to deal with useless managers. Now back to my original question... if all this park & loop gets thrown out would Royal mail be able to make me go back to working 5 day weeks once I had been working 4 day weeks. If I ended up back on 5 day weeks it would be better if I was full time as the 5 day week would impact on my ability to do work on the side,But obviously if this did happen I know royal mail would not give me the option to go full time again.

hmmm...yes i know...this is what makes me nervous. Nothing is certain in royal mail anymore. The only thing I am certain of in this company is Royal mail will cock everything up!

A couple of worrying responses already. Didn't we go on strike to get people their 4 day weeks back though when management tried to revert to 5 day weeks, surely there is some kind of precedent here. (sorry, I know as I type this it is a ridiculous thing to say....i'm clutching at straws aren't I!)

It's certainly easier to take away a 4 day week than a full time job.
Have heard stories of revisions been voted in with PT getting 3 & 4 day weeks.
Then them being told these will be took away when WSM comes because there is too many indoor hours.
That's why the revisions aren't working

I went on strike for 20 weeks and got my 4 day week back,anyway moving on to the original question.

If your revision fails and needs to be looked at certain duties may be moved around,changed ect and your one may be one of them but then again it may not.
Some duty sets may have to be changed but then again they may not.
If everything is ok then NO they can't just take your duty off you or feck around and change things.

EDIT:Didn't see gb93's post,it will depend tbf on what kind of revision you have just had and if you have had the full lot.

Yeah that's a fantastic union we have isn't it? Let the management do whatever they like. Don't bother losing money by going on strike.

Hey, postman....I wasn't having a pop at London Posties BTW...It was aimed at management! I was hoping some kind of precedent had been struck...as i said...i'm probably clutching at straws with this one.

We have a park and loop revision, and we already have WSM, though I think it may not be full WSM at the moment.

Looks like I may have to go for the 5 day week, full time option

...I really don't trust Royal mail.

Only problem is 4 day weeks are so tempting....could i get the DOM to put something in writing along the lines of ...My 4 day week is a permanent change?

If your contract states 30 hours royal mail could if it was deemed reasonable and you agreed you could work 30 hours in a row. All any employer is obliged to do is to 'consult' it employees on major changes and give reasonable notice to changes in attendance patterns and it won't be too long in the future when they will be able to say there is only enough work in the summer for us to pay you 20 hours like it or lump it. The future is bright.....

GHOSTman...there is as much chance of your 4 day week sticking as the 5 day week.
Go for the one that suits you...or it will nag away at you forever that you made the wrong choice.

Fishtank, yeah, I have been thinking along those lines. Even if it only lasted a couple of years, i'd hope that in that time i had used the extra days off to good effect, it would allow me to gain more experience in my other trade that i get more enjoyment from.

I just don't trust royalbloodymail...did i mention that!

And yes perhaps in the present climate and the chance for you to go full time,the 5 day week may be the better option.

You only need to work your Contractual Hours as long as you inform Manager before you leave the office if you cannot complete the Delivery.
