Overtime Allocation

Post by femrep »

Has any of the reps been asked to allocate overtime within their offices?
A number of staff complained about how the overtime was allocated by manager, favouring some more than others. So I have been asked as union rep to take over this.

Has anyone any suggestions for a fair system?

That is probably one of the most difficult and thankless tasks in any office...if you are a fair minded person....
No matter how you allocate overtime you will be accused of bias.
You could try putting a sheet up on a monday morning and asking anyone who wants O/T to put there name down and then working from there but someone will always bitch that they didn't get asked or "he gets more/better/easier overtime than me".
Good luck...you are about to enter a world of pain. :nervous

You get the greedy single men, who never have a enough. While the person who has a mortgage and kids to feed doesn't get any over time. Thats where the manages are going wrong.

Staff the office properly and do away with the need for o/t?

In our DO (where we have a really good DOM) in the lead up to Xmas he would use a flip chart with the relevant days/date on a separate sheet asking for volunteers for OT and collections when required.I felt that this approach worked really well and those who wanted OT got it and those who didn't want it were left alone, there was no pressure put on anyone to do OT.

We are a smallish unit (approx 36 of us) and it worked pretty well generally, most of the heated arguments that arose were down to heavy workloads and fatigue.

You could try the aggregate system....my OH helped implement it when he was CWU rep.

People put their name on sheet for whichever day they want to work with everyone starting on zero hours. As people start totting their hours up, the person with the least hours gets first pick, then the person with the next least and so on and so on. He did it over a rolling 13 week period and on the 14th week everybody started on zero hours again.

It worked well in our office and stopped all the shouts of favourisism and unfairness.

Aggregate system,simples.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Create a fair and simple system with ur dom & then let the dom implement it.

The aggregate system mentioned above looks fair & simple. I'm assuming the aggregate system (over 3 months) only totals o/t and not contracted hours.

My personal opinion is o/t should first be offered to those doing the least hours making them up to f/t. When everyone wanting o/t has worked the same num of hours, then it should then be offered first to the f/t guys who have not done any o/t. SOme will say this is unfair to f/timers.

Any transparent system is better than the 'favourites system'.

I know my dom's system for last min hiccups.....call those first that he knows are most likely to say 'yes' cos he doesnt want to go on a walk.

i'm in the category of kids to feed but i'd prefer a system where me & the 'greedy' singles have equal & fair access to o/t.

Let us know what you decide so i can beat up my rep for getting his cronnies all the o/t. Wish we had a rep like you.

I've not heard of this before, but seems quite a nice system, once we get the New Year out of the way, might have to have a closer look at this.

OT is allocated on an annual aggregate system in my MC, ie hours are aggregated over a 12 month period, and those with the lowest aggregate get any OT if there is a surplus of volunteers. But we have Bookroom staff who keep the hourage records and allocate the OT.
It might take a fair amount of time in your DO femrep, so if you do take it on you should make sure you get enough time from your duty to do it.
