Cut-Off Protocols

Post by taurus88 »

Hiya guys,

Hypothetically (this will only be hypothetical for a short while longer), if I cut-off with two bags still at my drop point, what should be done with the two bags? And should I endorse any of the mail to cover my arse in terms of various charges of wilful delay? Naturally, I'll be keeping my manager apprised of the situation, morning, noon and cut-off o'clock.

i think you should always be careful on cutting-off it always give your manager the chance of a wilful delay case.

put the pressure on your manager make him make a decision on the time you finish sorting and preping your delivery

or just take out your live mail, all mailsort leave to the side then box it all up and explain what you will be leaving.

all areas work different in leaving mail but the most important thing is to tell your manager.

if the office is getting work late it is down to the manager to make allowances for this, you should still have the

same amount of time to deliver the mail. also weigh the work and record the figure.

once you take the work out on delivery the manager could not careless, but if you make him make the decision before

you leave the office the pressure is back on him.

You shouldn't have any bags at your drop off point.

What should be done is you leave mail in the frame and tell your dom which streets you won't be able to manage before pulling out any mail from the frame. Then its up to your dom to get it covered. The dom might play the "you can finish that duty in your time no problem" card...then just ask your dom to test you.

Different areas have different protocols for cutting off.
It's a local agreement thing.
The only thing that doesn't change is the need to inform your manager at the earliest opportunity then as has been said...let the manager...manage.
I would however be careful of the..."We'll send someone out to get the bags in 10 minutes" trick. :whistle
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

That's all very well in theory but completely useless when you're bagging up for the first time on a walk you have never done in your life. You know for a fact you won't finish (partly due to outside factors - see some of my recent posts about being sent out to the sticks), but it's impossible to say exactly at which point you will 'not finish', which means in all likelihood taking the whole lot out.

Now I know, right now, before I even post my first letter on this round, that I won't be able to get it done. I have a five-hour per day contract. It will take twenty minutes to get there, twenty minutes to get back. It will take at least forty minutes in the morning to bag up, do redirections, missorts and packets, etc. That's an hour and twenty minutes gone already - if I have a good day (which is unlikely on a round I don't know), and it assumes that they will get me out promptly, which they won't.

So say an hour and a half, minimum. Which brings me down to three and a half hours - before I've even started. Take off my half hour meal relief and we're down to three hours - before I've even started. And everyone in our office knows the rurals are usually the longest. There's no chance, so I intend to be ready for whatever opening salvo is thrown at me when I make it clear that there's no chance.

Consider that I will have to be picked up at a set time and it complicates the issue even more re: cutting-off. At what time should I make the phone call? Should I advise the driver to collect any leftover bags? Should I speak to our union representative prior to delivery to get myself a bit more clued up?

Appendix 3 of the conduct code explains it. Look in downloads section of the forums.

Start all over again tomorrow.

The proper procedure is as follows.

Throw all your mail in your frame including your % of d2ds and
then you go and see your dom and tell him you wont manage to complete
within your time and you dont want to work over, what should I do?
He/she will probably be pissed off with you for not telling them sooner
but you point out that what you did was the correct procedure
and that it is written in the agreement.
Depending on the dom, it may be best to take in a witness so that there
is no misunderstanding on either side :chuckle

What happens if you feel that you have enough time to deliver but then when out on your delivery factors mean you can't i.e. you get stuck in a lift for 2.5 hours? Managers have all gone home or not answering phone

Do you....
A) keep delivering right up to time and leave mail in your bag drop as you can't physically carry it all back

B) Cut off earlier to ensure that you have enough time to ferry all the work back to the office?

I'll be honest as this sort of thing scares me... you make a judgement call in good faith but know that the DOM can/might use it to suspend/sack you!

It would have to be B. I would try phoning office on my mobile so that it is recorded on my phone
that I tried. If no answer then I would ferry all mail back to office, leave a note on managers desk
explaining and then go home. I would also get in touch with union rep if I had any worries over
what the dom would do so that the rep knows first thing about what is happening.

Crazy isn't it!

Thing about B is that if it takes a hour to get all the work back it takes a huge chunk out of your delivery time meaning even more mail not delivered. This is where in my opinion RM really falls down... the quality of management! Like with some postmen/women its all about how little work can I do how quickly can I get home sod the paying customer :(

This is why DOMS should be in the office till the last man is back, there have loads of times last year problems with keys, vans, injuries and getting stuck in snow at aeound 2pm onwards, our DOM only gave us his number as we practicly had to force him to give it to us, and the other 2 idiots we have managing our place couldnt care less.

pretty shocking tbh

we`re told to ring the local MC if we have any problems and they`ll deal with it.
