How do i become a union Rep

Hi there

i have decided that i wish to try and become the union rep in my local sorting office, i have been with the Royal Mail for 4 years presently on a 24hour contract, and have become disillousioned with my rep. There seems to be a communication breakdown, especially for us part timers, i havent had any information on anything effecting my job for a long time, and i feel (although generally i like my rep outside his rep duties) that we need some new union representation. I've never had a role like this, but i hear you recieve training, can anyone help me with any info.

contact the main area rep and suggest a ballot takes place with you and the existing union rep and the winner becomes rep

There are a lot of elections going on at the mo , so if you have missed them i am sorry
you may/mat not be able to stand later in the year in a vote of No Confidencce seek advice from your Area Rep or Divisional Rep Good Luuck

You could always become Sub Rep if there is'nt already one.

A lot of reps are full time and sometimes it is unfortunate but they dont get to see the
part timers who come in later. As Stormproof has suggested it makes better sense
to become a deputy rep in the office which would give part timers more access to
union representation and find out more what is going on.
This will also help you learn the role of rep and give you more experience should
you want to take the role on later.

Wait for yearly elections & get someone to nominate you. However, I was unaware that yearly elections took place until this year as previous union rep didn't advertise this in the three years previous to them leaving. I've been rep since mid 2010 & already I have to reapply.

I am also part time so that doesn't affect your ability to do the job.

unions probably nearly finished anyway theyve got no authority management walk all over them look at the new agreements nothing in the posties favour

Unit rep positions along with a sub rep should be elected on a yearly basis.
Your branch chair should send down the paperwork which should be displayed in your office on the union boards where interested canditates should put there names forward for the postions.
If more then one person goes for the postion then a ballot should take place among the office membership to decide who will be elected.
If you do get a postion try and set up a commitee as well along with a bookholder to allocate overtime amongst the unit.
Training should take place at the unions school,it used to be done on a 5 day course down at The Elstead hotel in Bournemouth where release is given.Not to sure if it still goes on there it may be somewhere else.
Good luck and if elected listen to your members and keep them informed as much as possible.
