casual staff

Did any office get xmas casuals this xmas?? Were really struggling and not 1 casual/extra pair of hands has landed in our office! Relying on staff to be out in the pitch dark till 6,7 8 pm (and snow and ice ) is not the way to go about things ! Some customers are gonna be very dissapointed this xmas ,well planned r m !

No, no, no: you're getting all confused. All these hundreds of thousands of extra casual staff that RM like to bleat on about to the press aren't for helping out with the back-breaking, freezing-cold work that postmen and women do. No. They are for working inside heated buildings, especially employed to ignore postcodes on letters and packets and send everything to the wrong office.
Having had our holiday relief removed to work in the mail centre the only extra help we were given was from people working their days off to come in and do packet runs to ease the pressure off the rounds. Thanks RM managers- I hope you all die a horrible fiery death over the Xmas holiday.

Same at our DO. Got causal staff working day and night sorting but somehow we are supposed to cope with 2 or 3 times more packets?

I know all the faces in our office of 200+ people, and I've only seen one casual in the last two weeks. Maybe the rest are buried under the snow in the yard.

I like the comment about the sorting staff - having witnessed first hand just how illiterate some of the workers appear to be in the mail centre, no wonder the mail isn't getting to people in any sort of timely manner. Must need sorted four times before heading in the wrong direction, only to be sorted again, then return, re sorted incorrectly etc.

Glad it's not just my office that is screwed with no temps.....has anyone else had less than the usual number of hire vans, err hired? And have you also been expected to spend an hour on IPS ( usually more - and leaving loads behind ) to try and cover the shortfall of no nightshift sorting ( and no, 5 blokes coming in an hour early to do extra IPS ain't a nightshift )?

Even with my blinkered eyes, at my office it is looking like a MASSIVE FAIL, and to clear what is expected to be left tomorrow, could take as long as after the New Year - well done RM, double management bonuses all round!

No casuals in my office but then why would I expect anything else, still, only 1 more day to go and because my knees are bad, tomorrow will finished at time and then off home for a well deserved break

we had 4 at the start of the pressure period but 3 didn't come in on day 3 and the last walked away after day 4.

In our local paper. (23rd December) R/M are advertising for 'Casual mail sorters@

about 6-8 last week and a few managers to clear the packets as we dont have enough drivers.

How has your walk sequencing been over the xmas pressure? Mines been about 70% sequenced and 30% walk sorted all week. I guess they havnt had the time to finish it all off or the machines are not able to cope with the volume? Today was the worst i got a tray of mail which was sequenced but with 20% of other random mail mixed in! Wasnt in big chunks either where maybe they put it in the tray by accident it was properly mixed into the sequencing

We had a whole bunch at Mount Pleasant, the usual run of students, teens, Mums and whatnot. To be honest, I found them hard-working, cheerful and in general, pleasant to be around when they weren't fading into the background.
