New Clawback Scam ?

Heard a rumour that if deliveries are suspended in delivery-only office you are given the options;
Go home after prep and lose half day AL, or
Get in your car a drive to nearest mail center to work your time.
If its too dangerous to deliver mail to houses near DO how can driving 5 -10-15 miles to mail center be viable ?
Even if they lay-on transport, my own personel risk assesment would say "No - Severe Weather, only travel if absolutely nessesary".

There is the first flaw in their plan...
If they want you to go to a mail centre they can lay on the transport and they can bring you back....inside your duty time of course.

yeah we got this too.....we where told also if we went home early the hours would be banked to be used at a later date......which hopefully means working your day off to make up the hours!!!!!

Without wishing in anyway to sound rude but what are you saying? You want to be paid to sit at home? for once RM appear to be being fair.

Are Royal Mail exempt from employment law?

If you turn up for work and the building is closed or management say there is no work, for example, deliveries are suspended due to bad weather, they cannot deduct your wages, force you take a days annual leave, or clawback the time. Check the governments website for your rights!

I would quite happily deliver mail to accessable delivery points, but if all delivery work is suspended ( because of severe weather) then I think that includes travelling to another office - unless RM are going to guarantee my health and safety on the severe weather affected roads. If its too unsafe to walk down the road delivering mail then its too unsafe to travel to another town just to give a smug manager the satisfaction of being awkward. If you get crushed in a pile-up just to keep them happy your family wont get any thanks for it.

So...you agree to introduce claw back and then you turn up for work one day and Royal Mail decide to lapse your duty and send you home...unpaid.

if thet take you to the mail center and bring you back in time for you to finish at your own office there is not a lot you could say but if its that bad you would only be a the mail center fotr may be an hour and you would need a break as well

please wise up.I used to be a signwriter/signmaker in a small firm of ten employees and if there was no work you got hame early and when it was busy you got overtime at time and a half,and double time on a sunday,
if they can do it why cant royal mail.

This is complete rubbish from the manager if it is factual.

Royal Mail have a duty of care to the employee and if it is unsafe to deliver they have a number of options and none of them include claw back , losing annual leave or driving your car to another mail centre or delivery unit.

However if they provide transport and the work is inside and safe and legal in a mail centre or even another delivery office then they can ask you to work in another location within reasonable distance and if they then return you to your parent office. Remember your contrat of employment states that you can work in other locations within reasonable travel distance within Royal Mail.
