Advice regarding seniority and FT contracts

Post by OnAFlyer »

Hi all

I'm after some advice for a mate at work. A while ago he was off long term after a shoulder operation, during that time some permanent FT contracts were given out in our office, including to several staff lower than him on the seniority list.

He was never asked if he wanted to go FT (he would have jumped at the chance) despite keeping in regular contact with the office. There was nothing wrong with his sick record, disciplinary record etc and no reason why he shouldn't have been offered one ofthe FT contracts.

The Union rep shrugged his shoulders and said 'what can I do?'

Any advice as to what the next course of action is please? We're in the middle of a repick in our office, and he's obviously not happy that he's going to end up on a PT walk and others below him will have FT walks.

Cheers

The people that were next in line on the seniority list were asked if they wanted to go FT. They skipped him and asked the ones below him.

in that case he does have a valid greivance, would advise him to put in an official grevience as under the way forward agreement, the following rules were agreed:

14.3 The process for resourcing full-time and part-time, non-specialist posts will comprise one of four options, in the following order, unless agreed locally to change this order:

Internal advertisement of the job within the currently recognised resourcing unit/s.
Deployment of existing surplus employees.
The acceptance of an existing employee from the wider resourcing area or another resourcing area who has previously had his/her name placed on the transfer list for that resourcing unit.
External advertisement.

14.4 Where a full-time post is advertised internally, it will be available to all full-time employees and part-time employees, who have opted for full-time employment, in that resourcing unit. The posts will be filled on the basis of ‘most senior individual’. Where a part-time post is advertised internally, it will be available to all employees as above and filled in the same way.

the bit that worries me is the union rep who shrugged his shoulders...a very similar thing has/is happening at my office. The rep is fighting the corner of the people with less seniority who have been made up to full time without the jobs even being advertised. so more senior people who aren't in the loop are still A/Gs, whilst less senior people have secured full time contracts due to favourtism. At our office the area rep is actually fighting to make sure these less senior people don't lose their full time status to people who are above them in a re-pick. the word corrupt springs to mind.

The Union rep shrugged his shoulders and said 'what can I do?'
Errr contact him,he wasn't dead was he,he was just off sick,he could of even come into the office to look at the duties!!!

He shouldn't take this lying down,he has to cause a stir,he's been stitched up,needs to go higher than the rep.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
