The objective seems to me to spilit the unity of the delivery postman and the processing postman.
But remember this...'grand-father rights' can be bargined away.
Remember the PHG allowance, which i currently get, all the talk in the past couple of years has been of us losing it. That allowance is a 'grand-father' rights allowance.
If they can consider getting rid of mine, then they can do the same for yours.
What they should do is pay the same allowance for later hours!
Don't let this carrot spilit you away from the unity that we currently have.

Don't forget comrades, this is just a proposal. People will make their own minds up but we've got to see through this. Just a smokescreen so staff will start scabbing

G"randfather rights only temporary" - that's a confused message Grandfather rights would normally mean once you get it you should not loose it unless its written into a contract change. I may be wrong though but that's how I read it.

It was explained to us this morning that the options included a distribution pro rata to all staff members (including newbies and present non qualifying) as a basic wage package increase OR "grandfather rights" which would enshrine the present shift allowances into the package of existing qualifiers only, until retirement.

Obviously those who presently qualify do so by having done the duties, in many case over a number of years, and made their contribution to the business accordingly. I imagine the allowances would continue to be paid as a separate allowance, as if paid as a complete basic it would break one of our main aims which is a standard basic wage for all (London weighting apart of course).

Royal Mail attempt divide and rule over start times

Royal Mail management is pushing ahead with the introduction of a change in start times for delivery workers.

But, fearful of the prospect of more strike action in response to the imposed change, management has put back the introduction to 17 September.

The heads of Royal Mail have long suggested that they would like to move to a start time of 6am across all

delivery offices, without negotiating the change with the postal workers’ CWU union.

Whenever it is introduced, the new start time will force many post workers to work until later in the day, causing disruption for those who have built family life and other commitments around shifts that generally begin one hour earlier.

In particular, many delivery workers will have to work later on a Saturday, making it harder to spend quality time with their families.

In what appears to be a concession, Royal Mail has now guaranteed to continue with the exisiting £12.50 weekly shift allowance as a result of the later start.

Importantly however this will only be for existing workers.

This creates the possibility of creating a two-tier work force in deliveries.

So for instance for the new workers, the lack of the £12.50 allowance would wipe out the miserly 2.5 percent pay offer.

Prior to the latest offer Bob Gibson, the CWU assistant secretary, told Socialist Worker that management was attempting to create confusion.

He said, “It was telling some areas of the country that it plans to implement this change, and put up notices on boards to this effect. But in other places, there is no mention of it at all.â€

divide and rule

Post by gspot01 »

Spot on with the divide and rule prospect thats def what the plan is, but for those that are not yet falling on the unions side

Remember this.......... Royal Mail. No more money. No talks.

Hey a month down the line with the pressure they are under and where are we. Already £12.50 better off.

Keep the fight going and we can win the lot :nana :nana :nana

Do you remember the pay deal a few years ago that got rid of the PHG grade, and also the Saturday Premium and Saturday Premium OT. They said the PHG allowance would be safe with so-called 'Grandfather Rights' and that the Saturday Premiums would be incorporated into the pay deal. Well, that was all a con, as the increase didn't fully cover these Sat Premiums. So when they tell you their incorporating something into your pay deal, it's a way to save a few quid off everyone.

Though it goes against my principles to defend Royal Mail, those separate allowances were not pensionable, so incorporating them into basic pay is to our advantage eventually, as it means a slightly bigger pension. Trouble is, of course, we now hear that we might have to work until we're 65 before we can retire :mad
