Many on here have been quite dimmisive of Royal Mail"s world class strategy stating its just another TQM fad of which Royal Mail have had many.

However this in my view and most who have heard the reports from Reps in Gatwick , Warrington , Belfast , Cardiff , and Bristol it is different concept all togther. The money they are spending on it and the postman ad women who are buying into it some working in their own time on ideas to remove dust is a real danger.

Whilst world class mail states it is all about health and safety the reality is that it is all about getting people to buy into the concept and then to continiously improve in both terms of cost and efferiency.

In mail centres a whole range of new ideas from our members have been bought without any discussion such as York tippers. In order to improve productivity they have taken to videoing indivduals working mostly at machines but not exclusively and then sitting down with the workers and watching on ways to improve workers speed etc.

You will have seen a number of mail centres have now recieved a bronze award for world class mail and they have an audit and award points. They use the services of Professor Yasmir from Japan who is the leading expert on the concept of world class philosophy which a lot of firms in the UK adopt including Mark Higson previous employer. Fiat in Turin also adopts the concept as well as a lot of other world organsiations.

Royal Mail now want to roll it out to delivery units and are seeking to recurit a world class lead for each region. The delivery offices currently in World class mail are Cardiff North , Taunton and Burguss Hill.

Burguss Hill is the furtherest advance out of the three. They work on the what they call attacking waste : they use the 3Ms Method ,man and material to identify waste.

In burguss hill they worked out that staff were wasting to much time clearing the frames by making three or four visits to clear the frame they have now given them equipment which means they only now need to clear the frame once therefore saving some considerable hours.

Royal Mail have a cost implication of 4 :1 meaning any changes by world class mail must produce 4 times the savings.

Unlike Mail Centres which have ten pillars , world class mail in delivery units will have 3 pillars. The first being safety , second workplace organisation and the thrid people devlopment.

So contrary to what some would have you believe Royal Mail have no intentions of dropping World Class mail"s and therefore it will pose a great threat to both workers and the union unless we adopt a strategy which will derail it.

You beat me to it Daz, signing up to it in a national agreement, doesn't exactly sound like the best way of derailing it.

Discussed this with a colleague earlier last week. There we are on the CSS machines, coming up to the peak Xmas pressure, and not a `york` to be found, at the start of the shifts. Having to use those `dollies`, so now have dollies scattered all over the MC. H&S rep up in canteen filling his face, with not a care.

If we are getting to pick and choose which parts of the agreement we "derail" ...can i nominate pegasus?...or the IWT...also while we're at it can i have my 3.5% due in 2012....now.... because i'm not sure at this rate whether the company or the union or both are going to make it to 2012.
If World Class Mail is such a threat...like Daz said...why agree to get involved in the first place?

And as for de-railing it i wouldn't worry too much...if this gets as far as the Delivery Offices it will de-rail itself.
When third class managers try to implement a world class initiative....the wheels will fall off before they load the first DVD into the sandwich toaster.

Talking of DVDs, you've got to laugh but in our last couple of WTL the DIMs not been able to get the DVD player to work

World class mail in mail centres is bollocks. bronze award! what a joke!They can;t even give DO's accurate traffic figures or a good standard of presentation. What a waste of money!!!!!!!!
