part timers 20 min meal relief

how many part timers .(im 24 hours ) actually get thier supposed 20 minute break ?? ..i imagine hardly any ..im lucky if i finish early once a fortnight, these days ..come in 9.30 ..have mail waiting most days ..then packets ..redirecs ..make up d2ds .and bundle up .do kill off .get to start ..and deliver it all ..with the added extra time of delivering d2ds on top . ..get back ...im supposed to complete all this in 4.48 mins..with 20 min break in between ..anyone got a magic wand ...we all lay down and let our glorious union ..create this joyous senario ..did no one actually question what was happening ..

I would suggest it is possible to finish on time sometimes on a light day or even early if its very light and recordeds and specials are in the low numbers..Only if the following applies :-

1) You crack on at the best pace you can (not stopping for a second..20 minute break,,whats that ??)

2) You know the walk reasonably well.

3) You use your own car.

Anything else,,,No chance unless you run.

How the suits, laptops, georoutes, planners and anyone else who have never done the job came up with a scenario in which the job can be done in the time is anyones guess. Its beyond me after my first year anyway,,Having said that working in a large office where all walks are equal and having done a fair few of them it has to be said some walks are more equal than others,,,All IMO of course (which counts for jack !)

No........ you are supposed to work for 4.48mins with a 20min meal relief.
Your contract doesn't say anything about completing anything.
Of course as long as you are completing no one gives a toss that you haven't had your break...apart from you.

Take your breaks regardless of the consequences, its your absolute right and you are still being paid while taking those breaks, unlike at most other jobs in the country!

If you know that taking your entitled breaks will result in you going over your contract time, see your lino ASAP before leaving depot to say so. If you are happy to complete, say so and estimate how much o/t you need. If you want to finish at your contract time, which you have every right to do, say so and communicate with your lino which sections of mail will not be taken out by you.

Don't forget that your break entitlement is based on how long you have worked that day...
Upto 4hours 59mins, 20 mins break
5hours to 6hours 59mins, 30 mins break
7hours to 8hours 59mins, 40 mins break
etc. etc.

It is always better to take your break entitlement, but if for whatever reason you do not, account for it (honestly) on the overtime docket!

The theory is great and dont get me wrong I am in total agreement with you,,

However, what happens in reality ?

You have twenty minutes left in your day and an amount of letters left that will take that time,,What happens? Well, I would suggest in most cases people finish up, pouch off, bugger off home and forget about it. The alternative is take the letters back and face the grief. Ok you are not actually at fault but it appears to me that most people take the path of least resistance and give up their break. I work in a big DO and I dont hear of much cutting off...Not until P and L started anyway !!!

Ironically I think this is where P and L works in our favour. No cars, work your hours, take your break, cut off if (when ) necessary. Unless they come out and test your speed everyone is in the same boat and no unfair advantage with people treating it as a personal battle to get finished early. Currently I am as bad as anyone else. Come in early, use my car so I can be in with a shout of a reasonable finish..As soon as P and L starts in my sector those two minutes after ten past will the the minutes I walk in that door and my scheduled finish time will be on the dot,,,,My commitment, like everything else, will be pro rata..Then again, if they want to give me a FT contract,,,lol

I usually just claim for it at the end tbh.
No one else in the DO takes their break but sometimes I might sit down for ten whilst out on delivery and have a bite to eat and drink.

Not if like the OP you work less than 5hr a day.

It's nothing to do with Royal Mail it's UK law .

Take the relief ...it's yours..... if you go over..... book the excess.... if they don't pay it.......cut off....simples.

You should not have to give up your meal relief in order to finish on time

I never take my full break either, just 5 mins 2 or 3 times during my stint, always get collared for some skivvy task indoors, can't cut off, not while on rehab and not delivering !

I take my break. If I'm going to go over by a few minutes then I don't mind only having a 27-minute or so break, because I'm not completely anal. But I don't run around, skip my break, just to help management clear the office. If I'm going to go over by more than a few minutes then I expect at least half an hour's pay - for me doing them a favour.
