With the mech mail now being sequenced does that mean that more of the manual mail will be able to be read by the machines or is it a case that if it's unreadable (by the machines) then it's unreadable?

I ask because our office has started P&L on just one of the sections, the other two haven't yet, and there still seems to be the same amount of mail to sort, if not more.

Those doing P&L are having to come in early on docket to get their teeth into their sorting, one person even said that they were told that the maximum time alloted for IPS was 1hr 8mins yet they are going well over that.

Will it come to the point where the sensible option to make it work will be to bring back night sorters? If so, I'm in!

Someone who works on these machines will be able to tell you for sure, but I believe the new generation of machines are better able to read the addresses on letters etc. Time will tell.
I doubt very much if RM would be interested in reinstating night shifts. They cost more and generally speaking, humans are not at their most productive at 2am in the morning, as we are not nocturnal.

AKAIK with the iLSMs (which break the mail down into batches for the CSS) once an item is rejected it can't be run through again, I've heard that the reject rate for iLSMs is higher then the old LSMs.

And just to add to that ,the tolerances of the cssm's are far tighter than the old WSM's so you will get more manual,more IPS more modern. Christmas cards

The mail is already barcoded when it arrives at the sequencing machines (you may have noticed the faint red post office barcode printed on letters).

There are actually more rejects due to barcodes not being printed correctly (i.e. off the edge of the letter), however I have noticed a marked increase in the quality of the machine handwriting recognition which prints the barcodes.
I am expecting this Christmas to involve a lot less IPS than last Christmas due to better machine sorting.

The thing is that I just can't see where the time is going to be saved that will enable us to spend much longer out on delivery. The 318 that I saw looked as though they'd plotted every task onto it and what was left over they alotted to sorting and prepping.
