I'm sad to say that over the past few years 3 or 4 people in my office have been caught stealing mail..... and rightly sacked!

Does anyone know if RM automatically prosecute?

Reason I ask is that people just seem to disappear and you then here rumours about IB and stealing. The last person who got sacked was caught (allegedly!) by IB taking a 'doctored' letter from another postman walk... they suspected he would do it! The rumours were this postman had been at it for 18 months and had got away with £50,000 worth of cheques. Now, if thats correct he should be prosecuted.... period! but as far as I can tell he was allowed to resign and I can find out nothing else! Management will only say he 'resigned' Inevitably customers find out and and think that all posties are up to it as there are no consequence.

Also I find it just incredible that The Courier prints stories like 'RLE Postman jailed for stealing £80,000 from SD's' Most people, myself included think for GODSAKE its hardly something to be proud of that it took £80,000 of thefts to get caught!

I think in most cases rm let them resign as its bad publicity to sack them. Hads a few at our place and one of them was a manager steeling sd, they let them resign, Im sure if it was a postie they would of sacked them and took them to court.

Now that makes me so effing ANGRY!

Oddly one of the sacked was a manager and I know that he's definitely been prosecuted as another manager said he'd been to court.

When you've been working with someone for a few years and you'd call them a 'mate' to suddenly find out that they were stealing mail its kinda strange??? then not knowing what happened to them is again strange???

Edit: Come to think of it it would also be a deterrent to others if a manager stood up and said "Joe Blogs who's worked here for the last 10 years was yesterday sacked from RM for stealing/dishonesty... he will be prosecuted!"

i think they try and prosecute where possible. In the past its happened then nearly a year later when you have forgot about it you see it in the news.

I'm always astonished to read of the stories in which posties have managed to steal mail/packets of such immense value and for so long before getting gripped. How do you go about nicking a special? You sign for it and if you can't get rid of it you bring it back, surely the first special stolen should be the last? A bag of mail to me is something i feed to letterboxes, not a mystery bag of goodies to plunder when i feel like it.

It also always amuses me to read the comments of people when stories reach the media, "All posties are at it", "My birthday card off nan didn't arrive, now i know for sure that the posite pocketed it!" ...nothing to do with your nan scribbling the wrong postcode and address then, no? What honest angels these people are!

Think if its in you to rob then its just a matter of time before temptation gets too much.

Known a few at our place who have been done for it & taken to court...also know a young lass from another office,friend of a friend,who seemed like butter wouldnt melt who got busted for it also,couldnt believe it when i found out.

Always find it amazing when you read in the papers about posties who have a houseful of mail when the IB finally catch up with them.

Who the f**k could live like that,amongst packets & friggin' mailsort.

How would you explain that to any visitors?

It's funny, really. When I get into work I see a letter as someone else's piece of s**t. A recorded is a nuisance and an SD an unwelcome burden - they're all things I just want to get rid of, asap. I'm not interested in other people's stuff. The only time I am intrigued is when we get a bulk mail to every house on a street, but I only usually have to wait until I encounter someone at the door and they'll happily tell me what it is.

You could say you were working from home!

Many years ago our office had an instance of "missing mail" both incoming and outgoing,it was narrowed down to one delivery which was covered by two posties on rotation,one of which was a great chap,much liked in the village he delivered to,the other was greatly disliked for his abruptness and rudeness(in office too). It was pretty obvious who it was,word leaked out amongst the staff of the ongoing investigation and everyone waited for the disliked culprit to get his just desserts.

He was eventually caught with marked birthday cards and admitted it immediately,casually only stating that "they're all at it" What did stun the office however(and the village in question) was that it was the "great chap" who was stealing and not the home banker after all!

I've heard all sorts of stories personally, it's hard to distinguish the real ones from myth. Heard a distant rumour about somebody who was burying mail, I'm absolutely convinced that this must be urban legend that is recounted to every new-starter in every office throughout the country. If not, I'm absolutely amazed, it sounds completely absurd. Not heard of any thieves around abouts though, we must have good thieves in our office

As a new recruit years ago I shared a walk on overtime with a postie who`d been there a few years. Not only did he stiff me by giving me more than half the walk ( I didn`t know it), but he was putting his half in the loft at home and claiming the O/T.
He was caught when his dad needed something out of the loft and found sackfuls of mail. His dad called royal mail in. The guy was jailed, can`t remember how long he got, and was last heard of delivering pizzas.
