I had a women a while ago who paid for a parcel to be delivered before 9.am. I had to make a special trip out early only to find no one at home She phoned up the office later the day to complain and arange a re-delivery as she takes the dogs to the park between 8am -9 every day

Sometimes it is to do with insurance value.
Sometimes it is the sender who insists on the SD in order to be able to track the item, so the recipient can't claim they never recieved it.
Sometimes people have accounts set up with a specified postal service and they never bother updating it.

Spot on.... I ordered some tickets and they turned up Special.... didn't ask for it or pay extra... company said that all tickets over a certain value get special'd

Its best when you go to re-deliver a parcel on a certain date (as instructed by the customer) & they arent in for the second time.

Since becoming a Postie I have faced a daily battle in which i have had to fight the urge to label every member of the public an idiot. I find it so disrespectful when you knock on with a re-delivery only to find them out again - yes it is our job and we get paid to do it. However, you wouldn't deliberately piss on the floor for the toilet cleaners, or pay for your weekly shopping with copper coins. Common courtesy seems to fly out of the window when it comes to delivery people. If you get big parcels every day why not buy/make a lockable box for the postie to put them in? Saves time and hassle for all parties involved. Surely people don't actually like driving up to the office every other day to pick up their ebay crap? Same goes for the people who consistently get DVD's, big magazines, loads of mail etc etc yet can't be arsed to upgrade their 3 inch by 1 inch letter box, surely they can't enjoy recieving wet or creased birthday cards and photos?

It's not an excuse, but the public are generally ignorant of what our job entails. A postman's job is somewhat stereotyped. I guess if you were to conduct a survey, something along these lines -

a) how many bags does a postman usually use on delivery?
b)what does a bag usually weigh?
c) how many packets/parcels do you think your postman carries on an average day?

- you would discover just how much of a fantasy world the public live in as regards what we do. And let's be honest, before starting with RM, most of us probably saw it the same way.

You are dead right taurus.
It is like on exam results day (I know it is different now cos they get the results txtd and stuff) when they used to wait on the street corner and expect you to have their results in that bag. If you explained that the mail for their street was in the sixth bag you would be doing and you would be at their house in a couple of hours, they'd look at you like you were lying.

Often the reason is that when someone takes a packet to a Post Office to post they're asked is it urgent and is it worth more than tuppence-halfpenny and if they answer 'yes' to either or both they're sold Special Delivery for a fiver whether or not they need it because it makes more money.
