Dear Colleague,
Openreach Service Delivery – Travel to and from Meal Breaks in a BT Building
Since the introduction of iLM, the issue of travel to and from BT buildings for meal breaks has been contentious. The CWU has consistently argued that members should be entitled to travel in company time so that they can get the full 40 minute break.
I am pleased, therefore, to report that agreement has been reached with Openreach which allows for up to 10 minutes either way to the nearest BT building. In the majority of cases this will be within the ellipse. Where the nearest building is not in the ellipse, members must make prior arrangements with their manager and inform the Control.
It is accepted that, in rural and remote areas, the time to travel to and from the nearest building may be more than 10 minutes each way. In these circumstances prior local arrangement can be made. It is suggested that Branches approach local managers with the aim of reaching local agreement.
I attach a copy of a letter from Openreach which sets out the agreement and may be used as a reference where necessary. Openreach will be issuing simultaneous communications on Thursday 18 November 2010.

Absolutely! Although I do believe the negotiating team is not the same...........................so.............dare we let them loose with the paid lunch break after their last effort at negotiating terms and conditions.

I suppose this'll depend on how big a dickhead your DIM is! Some use their common sense and realise we're trying to help them get the job done, others seem willing to argue over 15mins OT one day and then offer you as much Schedule as you want to get a duty cleared the next

Problem we're having is when our 20 hr guys normally get 20mins MR. They help out RM and do Full 8 hr days and then the DIM says they're still only getting the 20 min MR because that's what their contract says

Surely this means the precedent has been set within the communication industry, regardless of which branch, unless we are to be treated as lesser citizens? Something must be seriously wrong for the gavel not to fall in our favour.

I can't see how it would work in rural areas some of our guys are 20/30 minutes away each way it just wouldn't be practical. I would imagine in large urban areas it would be more than practical.........but if you have no canteen facilities what would be the point?

I believe the expression is a kerb side diner, or at least it was when I worked for an electricity board. We did try to get an allowance to make up for the fact that other employees had access to catered facilities, and very good too, but we didn't get it. What we got was a cooking stove, kettle, water bottle and a plastic sink to wash your hands, and that is really an important point. Where do you wash your hands after opening gates and touching letter boxes, etc.

Strange thing is when I graduated to working in the offices I still very very rarely used the dining room, I always took sandwiches or bought a pie or something and ate at my desk.

I know one postie who washes his hands under scalding water.
He leaves the tap running while he dries his hands and then uses a paper towel to turn the tap off.
He then uses another paper towel to open the door.
He's going to struggle isn't he?

We are trying to get the more local deliveries to split the round and include a break indoors. If i get one on the re-pick thats what i will be doing. I am sick of freezing in the van with a sarnie.
