Theory about the revisions
I was talking to a postie from another local depot this morning, he was asking how the revision went at my DO, and I explained to him what a disaster the whole thing had been. He came up with a theory, that the revisions are simply a way to make the service as rubbish as possible, so that when we get privatised, there will be no public sympathy for us. What do you think?
I suppose that after the privatisation goes through, they could put things back the way they were, and claim that they made things "better!"

No i really cannot see things ever going back to how they once were, privatised or not. The revision is there for one reason only "to save money"
Currently there is still a strong factor of "good will" in most delivery offices where upon folks are starting 30 mins (or more) before their time, not taking a proper break and rushing around working at a far greater pace than in other industries. As the ability to make time is removed by extending the deliveries plus daily absorbtion the penny will drop and folks will realise they are only hurting themselves by working for nothing. Then we will see the true extent of all these cuts being made when deliveries have become so large no one can complete them without extending.
Royal Mail have enjoyed a golden summer of people using their private cars (at their own cost) and starting early to get the work done. If you or i was running a firm there would be "NO WAY" we would rock that boat (would Tesco staff deliver your shopping in their private car) and if our staff finished a little early each day then so be it as we would know that they would beat us in the next day and already be hard at work when we arrived. Of course in the real world of normal working jobs that does not happen.
Once RM have killed the motivation then people will look for more money (which they will not pay) so folks will then slow down (or go sick with over worked stress) and finally RM will see what an affective and hard working workforce they ONCE had, but of course it will be much to late to go back.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

No i really cannot see things ever going back to how they once were, privatised or not. The revision is there for one reason only "to save money"Once privatised there will be even greater pressure to increase shareholders profits so the service and job satisfaction will decline even further.

Re: Theory about the revisions
I'm going to be honest here, I was once one of those workers, I would come in early, and use my car, and I would often skip my meal breaks, but not any more! Now that our revision has come in, I refuse to work one second before my time, and I take my full breaks every single day. Everybody in the office is the same, and we all bring back mail at the end. I feel that the new routes are simply impossible to complete within the time allocated, therefore I'm not going to do them any favours from now on.

Better late than never.
Reality is it was always going to change. The idea that it's the fault of somebody who tried their hardest to make it work is perverse. It may have been accelerated by them, yes, but let's face facts here - the job is changing because of a) corporate greed/ambition, b) the changing world and the "need" to modernise and c) the determination of higher forces to do away with the burden of a service that they have absolutely no idea about.
The only way it was ever going to stay the same was if we, the people who do all the work, got a hold of it. It would actually have been possible to make it succeed and be profitable that way, but unfortunately, the people upstairs couldn't see the letters for the trees. This is how it was always going to be. This is what happens when wannabe businessmen get their slimy claws on that which is dear to us. They rip it up and they run away with their pockets full.

Re: Theory about the revisions
The revision is still in it's embryonic planning stage in our D.O . The walks being talked about look ridiculous and the proposed van sharing is going to falter before it even gets going. Everyone works at different paces and it's going to cause so much friction between staff members. Plus, the walks closest to the office using the new HCT are going to be a nightmare to use , what with the over crowded pavements and kerbs every ten yards.
Uniform: we've been told we can't access the new one until the revision comes in. So, bodies are coming in wearing their own shorts, pants, water proofs and hats - it's pathetic. Would the Fire Brigade go to work wearing Bermuda shorts and flip flops or oxygen masks and helmets ? I had to break into the back room and liberate a new waterproof coat because I don't currently own one and my DIM said he needed the 'O.K' from his area manager to allow us to hand them out !
As for the revision itself. We have part timers coming in a full 1 hour and 45 mins early EVERYDAY coupled with the Full timers who come in religiously at 5.30am , it's no coincidence that the Royal Mail believe their is cope to alter walks and the way we work when they know full well that after a week or so, people are going to bend over backwards to make it work :( For shame

Re: Theory about the revisions
Privatisation will NEVER happen.
1, because no one would touch us with a bargepole.
and 2, if there was a big enough company ie TNT that could buy us, then the little firms ie UK Post would go kicking and screaming to the monopolies commision.
And 3 there would have to be a MASSIVE overhaul of the USO.
So there you go, in a nutshell you can rest easy.
As for revisions, can see them being called off in the next 6 months to a year, total abject failure.

Re: Theory about the revisions
Surely that would mean that someone would have to admit that they had failed? Never going to happen!

1. Yes they will if the goverment picks up the pension bill.
2. Tnt have tried before but put off by the pension debt if removed we would be broken up and sold with TNT running the DSA agreement.
3. The USO would be scrapped, who would object the public, can you jump on a bus and expect to travel anywhere in the country for a cut price fixed fee ?
No chance of the revisions being called off as Georoute says you can do it and its king in RM eyes
Sorry i cant see it getting any better in the next 5 years.

Re: Theory about the revisions
I heard load of problems all over.
I am going to ask another pair of questions.
Have there been any successful revision ? anywhere
Did the problem sort itself out after a month of change ?

You reached into my head, pulled out my thoughts and spilled them onto paper (well, a screen via a keyboard). Goodwill still exists in our office, but it's in ever scarcer supply, and I reckon the bottle will be empty just after Christmas.krussel wrote:alloria wrote:I was talking to a postie from another local depot this morning, he was asking how the revision went at my DO, and I explained to him what a disaster the whole thing had been. Re: Theory about the revisions
USO will go eventually the government will take it away most people don't know what it is anyway ffs and the ones that do will just moan and do nothing then get used to it. This country is full of spineless moaners who sit on their arse moaning but won't get off their arse and do something about what they are crying about. If the public had stood up and said NO! the Postal Service would never have been opened up to competition and we would have give the EU the finger, buses would still be run by the local councils instead on shitty First Bus and it's "lets not run a bus to that rural area because it's only old people with bus passes that live out there", trains would still be run by British Rail instead of useless companies that have multimillion pound trains with only 4 coaches so you have to stand by the door and next to a stinking toilet because there's no f***ing seats!
Privatisation sucks because quality always goes down but someone ends up rich and the greedy fat cats that push for it need to be shot in the head
Rant over.

Re: Theory about the revisions
If I agreed with that (which I don't) that only rules out selling Royal Mail as a going concern to 1 or 2 companies. It however does not rule out the other form of privatisation which is floating RM on the stock market.mclovin wrote:Privatisation will NEVER happen.

I think this is the more insidious version as it will be "Sold" as a chance for ordinary people to buy shares, however, in the medium to long term the shares will be picked up by Hedge Funds and asset strippers.
